Job Description
Position Description JH Kelly is seeking a proactive, detail-oriented Construction Buyer to join our Supply Chain Team in Longview, WA. This isn't just about purchasing—it's about building strong vendor relationships, optimizing delivery timelines, and ensuring project success through smart, cost-effective procurement of everything from steel, rebar, and copper to HVAC piping, electrical conduits, transformers, and essential fasteners like bolts, valves, and fittings. With at least 5 years of proven purchasing experience in industrial and commercial construction, you'll thrive on collaboration and make a real impact with a legacy construction leader. Here's a deeper dive into what you'll take on: Procurement & Purchasing Review purchase requests to ensure information is accurate, complete, and sufficient for procurement activities. Issue and manage purchase orders with accuracy and completeness. Ensure the timely procurement and delivery of quality materials, equipment, and services. Prepare and distribute requests for quotation (RFQs) and conduct spreadsheet analyses of bid results. Negotiate pricing, terms, and ongoing cost-saving opportunities with suppliers. Maintain purchase order accuracy to ensure quality standards and project requirements are met. Vendor & Supplier Management Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractor partners to improve service levels and reduce costs. Enhance delivery reliability and reduce lead times to improve operational efficiency. Coordinate with suppliers to resolve issues involving replacements, returns, cancellations, delivery delays, and price variances. Improve internal customer satisfaction through effective communication, proactive problem-solving, and responsive service. Collaboration, Process Improvement & Leadership Collaborate with Estimating, Engineering, Project Management, and Field Operations teams to support project requirements and schedules. Assist Accounts Payable in resolving invoice, receiving, and delivery discrepancies. Participate in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of purchasing policies, procedures, and systems. Mentor and support Junior Buyers in their professional growth and development.
Position Requirements What You Bring Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in purchasing. Experience 3-5 years of experience utilizing modern materials management, procurement, or ERP platforms to support purchasing, inventory, and supply chain operations. Experience using AI-assisted business tools to improve procurement efficiency, analyze purchasing data, support vendor research, generate reports, and streamline administrative processes in a construction environment. Understanding project cost management, cost coding, budget tracking, and the financial impact of purchasing decisions on overall project performance. Experience sourcing and purchasing commodities related to construction projects. Knowledge of procurement policies, procedures, and best practices. Knowledge of purchasing and contract laws and regulations. Experience with industry-standard procurement, ERP, and construction management software platforms. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and related business productivity tools.Education:
Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. Candidates without a bachelor's degree must possess a minimum of six (6) years of progressive experience in supply chain, procurement, purchasing, or materials management.Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to develop and implement innovative procurement strategies and solutions. Strong aptitude for learning, adapting to, and utilizing new systems, technologies, and software applications. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines. Strong negotiation, persuasion, and influencing skills to achieve procurement and business objectives. Project management skills, including planning, coordination, execution, and follow-through. Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Demonstrated commitment to achieving organizational and departmental goals. High degree of professional integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct. Willingness to work overtime as needed to support business and project requirements. Ability and willingness to travel to job sites, vendor locations, and other business locations as needed.Mindset:
