One year Position Summary We are seeking a Freight Rate Assistant - Junior Level to provide transportation, freight, shipping, and inventory management support to the U.S. Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) Transportation Office in Baltimore, MD. The position will support the processing and tracking of shipments, transportation documentation, freight rates, routing, billing information, and inventory movements. The successful candidate will work with transportation and inventory management systems, commercial carrier websites such as FedEx and UPS, and Government logistics systems, including the Naval and Electronics Supply Support System (NESSS) . Experience with NESSS is preferred. Key Responsibilities Review electronic transactions between commercial carrier booking systems, such as FedEx.com, and the Government's NESSS system. Manually enter non-electronic shipment transactions into NESSS. Respond to customer inquiries regarding shipment status using NESSS, FedEx.com, and the SFLC Shipping Tracking and Request Application (STAR). Track shipments and research Transportation Discrepancy Reports. Prepare and process bills of lading and other transportation documentation. Review freight rates and transportation routes using available reference information. Perform basic freight rating, routing, and classification activities. Conduct pre-audits of freight bills to identify errors or discrepancies. Maintain tariff files, special quotations, publications, billing guides, freight classification information, routing guides, and related transportation records. Compile transportation data involving carload, truckload, LCL, and LTL shipments, including carrier equipment, classification ratings, shipment sizes, and usage. Organize materials used for Transportation billing and shipping guides. Maintain accurate records of parts and equipment being shipped or received. Track and document the movement of inventory through applicable transportation systems. Support the SFLC Transportation Officer and senior transportation personnel with day-to-day logistics activities. Participate in formal training provided by senior traffic managers and pursue required transportation training and certification, including Global Freight Management through
TRANSCOM.
Required Qualifications Minimum one year of experience with transportation and inventory management processes and procedures involving transportation/inventory management software. Experience working with shipping logistics infrastructure, Government Bills of Lading, Commercial Bills of Lading, shipping manifests, or similar transportation documentation. Experience using commercial carrier online booking systems, such as FedEx.com and UPS.com . Experience with NESSS is preferred . Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook . Strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to accurately process transportation, shipping, freight, and inventory information. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English. Ability to work independently while operating under contractor supervision and Government oversight. Ability to walk throughout and climb stairs within a large warehouse facility. Work Environment This is an on-site position at Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Maryland. Employees generally work between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, although the Transportation Officer may establish specific working hours. Occasional work outside normal business hours, including weekends and holidays, may be required to meet Government operational needs. Telework is not authorized for this position. Security Requirements The selected candidate will be subject to Government security and credentialing requirements. The SOW anticipates a Tier 1, Low Risk, Non-Sensitive investigation and HSPD-12 credentialing using the SF-85 process. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have a background in freight operations, transportation coordination, shipping/receiving, logistics, inventory control, or supply-chain administration, with strong attention to detail and comfort working with computer-based logistics systems. Candidates who have worked with Government shipping documentation, FedEx/UPS shipping platforms, bills of lading, freight rates, or NESSS will be particularly competitive.

I would advertise this as a Junior Freight Rate Assistant / Transportation Logistics Assistant rather than simply "Freight Rate Assistant," because the latter may attract candidates with more senior freight-rating backgrounds than the SOW actually requires.
Pay:
