Job Description

Raybourn Group International Association Executive Director Raybourn Group International (RGI) is seeking a full-time association executive director to join our Indianapolis office. RGI is an AMC Institute-Accredited Association Management Company dedicated to helping nonprofit organizations, trade associations, and professional societies thrive. We partner with mission-driven organizations across a wide range of industries, serving as an extension of their teams and providing the expertise, strategy, and operational support they need to achieve their goals. Our team delivers comprehensive association management services, including executive leadership, strategic planning, membership growth and engagement, financial management, marketing and communications, advocacy, education and professional development, publications, and meeting and event management. Work Schedule:
Regular work hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., with flexibility as needed. The position allows a hybrid schedule with up to two remote workdays per week.
Travel Requirements:
This position requires periodic travel by air for client conferences, board meetings, and other events (approximately 2-3 weeks of travel annually). Some early morning, evening, weekend, and extended work hours are required in connection with meetings and events. Responsibilities:
The Association Executive Director serves as the senior staff leader for multiple association clients and is responsible for overall leadership, management, and organizational performance. Working in partnership with Boards of Directors and volunteer leaders, the Executive Director translates mission, strategic priorities, and goals into actionable plans and measurable results. The position provides leadership across governance, financial management, membership, programs and services, meetings, communications, partnerships, sponsorship, and volunteer engagement while balancing strategic leadership with hands-on execution. Strategic Leadership & Organizational Management Serve as the primary staff leader and strategic partner to assigned Boards of Directors and executive leadership. Work with volunteer leaders to establish and advance organizational strategy, priorities, and goals. Translate strategic priorities into annual plans, measurable objectives, budgets, and actionable work. Monitor progress toward organizational goals and regularly report results, opportunities, and challenges to volunteer leadership. Identify emerging trends, issues, and opportunities affecting the organizations, their members, and the industries or professions they serve. Bring forward recommendations and solutions that enable volunteer leaders to make informed decisions. Ensure organizational resources are focused on activities that provide meaningful member and organizational impact. Lead the evaluation and continuous improvement of programs, services, processes, and operations while balancing immediate needs with long-term sustainability and growth. Board Governance & Volunteer Leadership Serve as the primary staff liaison to Boards of Directors, executive committees, finance committees, and other key volunteer groups. Build strong partnerships with association officers while maintaining appropriate distinctions between governance and staff responsibilities. Develop agendas, reports, recommendations, and materials that support effective Board and committee discussions and decision-making. Advise volunteer leaders regarding governance practices, policies, bylaws, organizational procedures, and association management. Facilitate effective Board and committee meetings and ensure decisions and action items are appropriately implemented. Support Board orientation, leadership development, succession, strategic planning, and volunteer engagement. Help volunteer leaders move from ideas to action by establishing priorities, responsibilities, timelines, and next steps. Financial Management & Revenue Development Provide overall leadership for the financial health and sustainability of assigned associations. Develop annual budgets in partnership with volunteer leadership and AMC financial staff and manage operations within approved budgets. Monitor revenue, expenses, cash flow, reserves, and financial performance throughout the year and provide forecasts and recommendations as needed. Identify opportunities to strengthen revenue, manage expenses, and align resources with strategic priorities. Evaluate the financial performance and sustainability of programs, events, products, and initiatives. Provide leadership for sponsorship, partnership, and advertising opportunities, including prospect development, relationship management, revenue goals, and fulfillment of benefits. Ensure appropriate financial controls, policies, contracts, insurance coverage, tax and regulatory requirements, and other administrative obligations are addressed in coordination with appropriate staff and advisors. Membership & Member Value Provide executive leadership for membership growth, retention, engagement, and member experience. Develop or oversee membership recruitment, renewal, onboarding, and engagement strategies aligned with organizational goals. Maintain a strong understanding of member needs, expectations, challenges, and emerging priorities. Review membership trends, demographic information, retention, engagement, and other data to inform strategy and resource allocation. Ensure membership records and related data are accurate and effectively maintained within association management systems. Evaluate member benefits, services, and resources and recommend opportunities to strengthen member value. Build relationships with members and key stakeholders and maintain visibility and accessibility as the association's senior staff leader. Programs, Education & Meetings Provide strategic and operational oversight of association programs, educational offerings, meetings, conferences, and member services. Ensure programs align with strategic priorities, member needs, available resources, and financial goals. Partner with staff and volunteer leaders to evaluate existing programs and identify opportunities for improvement or innovation. Provide leadership for event planning and execution, including appropriate oversight of contracts, speakers, vendors, budgets, communications, staffing, and logistics. Attend key association events and ensure appropriate staff coverage and support. Evaluate participation, member feedback, financial performance, and organizational impact to guide future program decisions. Communications, Partnerships & External Relations Provide leadership for organizational communications and ensure messaging effectively communicates mission, priorities, programs, and member value. Build and maintain relationships with members, partners, sponsors, related organizations, vendors, public officials, and other key stakeholders. Identify opportunities for collaboration and partnerships that advance organizational goals and benefit members. Oversee member communications and digital resources to ensure information is timely, accurate, relevant, and accessible. Monitor external developments affecting assigned associations and help determine when and how the organizations should respond or engage. Team Leadership & AMC Client Management Provide leadership, direction, and accountability for staff supporting assigned association clients. Establish clear priorities, roles, expectations, and measures of success and address performance, capacity, or resource issues proactively. Delegate effectively while maintaining appropriate visibility into key initiatives, deadlines, and organizational risks. Coach and develop staff, provide timely feedback, and foster collaboration across functional areas. Serve as the primary relationship manager between assigned associations and RGI, building trusted relationships while representing the AMC professionally. Balance the responsibilities of serving as an association executive with the responsibilities of being an RGI leader and team member. Manage work within established staffing allocations, budgets, contractual scope, and organizational resources. Collaborate effectively with RGI colleagues across membership, meetings, communications, finance, technology, and administration. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, systems, processes, and service delivery. Successfully manage responsibilities across multiple association clients with different priorities, cultures, and expectations and contribute to RGI-wide initiatives as organizational needs evolve.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Applicant should demonstrate the ability to provide executive leadership for association clients, partner effectively with volunteer leaders, manage multiple functional areas, and translate organizational strategy into results, and have: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience. Certified Association Executive (CAE) strongly preferred. If no CAE designation, willingness to pursue the designation is expected. Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in association management, nonprofit leadership, professional societies, trade associations, or a related field. Demonstrated experience working with Boards of Directors, executive committees, and volunteer leaders. Experience developing and implementing organizational strategies and translating strategic goals into operational plans. Strong financial acumen, including experience with budgeting, financial reporting, forecasting, revenue development, and resource allocation. Demonstrated ability to lead multiple functional areas, programs, or significant organizational initiatives. Experience managing and developing staff and coordinating work across teams. Strong executive presence and ability to build credibility with senior volunteer leaders, members, staff, and external stakeholders. Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills. Strong judgment and demonstrated ability to navigate complex or sensitive organizational issues. Ability to independently establish priorities, make decisions, solve problems, and move initiatives forward. Strong project and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple clients, priorities, and deadlines. Comfort with technology and the ability to effectively use association management systems, project management tools, Microsoft Office, and other business platforms. Ability to move comfortably between strategic thinking and hands-on execution in a fast-paced AMC environment.
