Job Summary The Research Contract Specialist is responsible for drafting, analyzing, and negotiating a variety of research-related agreements, including sponsored and unfunded research contracts, clinical trial agreements, master agreements, and subawards/subcontracts. This role ensures that contracts align with University policies, state and federal regulations, and legal requirements. The Specialist provides guidance on contractual issues, supports faculty and staff in navigating complex agreements, and recommends solutions to mitigate risk and maintain compliance. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple negotiations simultaneously are essential for success in this position. Occasional after-hours work may be required to meet sponsor or institutional deadlines. Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks Independently draft, analyze, and negotiate new, as well as amendments to, standard and complex clinical trial agreements, master agreements, sponsored research agreements, unfunded research agreements (including, but not limited to, non-disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, data transfer and use agreements, and collaboration agreements), and subawards/subcontracts to meet legal requirements, including University policies, applicable state and federal laws and regulations, regarding intellectual property, publication, indemnification, export control, governing law, disputes, budget, invoicing/payment, and other regulatory terms. Routinely collaborate, under minimal supervision, external and internal stakeholders such as researchers, Office of Sponsored Programs, Research Compliance, IRB, Risk Management, Information Security, and Legal Affairs in the review of various contractual issues. Perform subrecipient risk analysis for noncompliance with Federal statutes, regulations, and subaward terms and conditions. Use sound and independent judgment with working knowledge of 2CFR200 to make accurate case-by-case determinations whether other party's role is a subrecipient or a contractor. Submit subrecipient Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act (FFATA) reporting. Serve as a contracts subject-matter expert and resource to University. Assist with updating Contract Services documents such as contract templates, contract checklists, standard operating procedures, guidance documents, and training materials. Assist with training student workers or other administrative support staff on Contract Services. Participate in professional development to remain current with standard and overall University, local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations. Monitor contract expiration dates and take appropriate actions. Maintain thorough and accurate records of contract negotiation notes and other data in a database or other form of data storage. • Assist in the preparation of reports as needed. • Perform other contract-related duties as assigned. Required Education/Experience Bachelor's degree in a related field. Four (4) years of experience in clinical/non-clinical research contract and/or grant administration. Knowledge of federal, state, local, and University guidelines and regulations for contracts. Strong experience in negotiation, communication, analysis, and customer service. Preferred Education/Experience Experience working with contract drafting, interpretation, and negotiation. Knowledge of research budgets. Previous experience in a university setting. Experience with PeopleSoft. Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Excellent verbal and writing skills. Proficient in MS Suite. Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy delivering quality work for tight deadlines. Proven technology skills and the ability to lead the institution in automation initiatives.
