The incumbent is responsible for dispatching to Police Officers, Parking officers, security guards and Student Security Patrol. The police dispatcher position is designated as essential personnel and will continue to work during periods where the University may suspend normal operations due to events such severe weather, natural disasters and/or hazardous situations.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
Complexity of Work:
Performs work of moderate difficulty. 1. The incumbent will not have any supervisory responsibilities but may direct the work of the Security Guards. 2. The incumbent will receive complaints by phone, provide travel instructions and direct citizens to various areas of campus; answer questions of a general nature concerning the organization and operations of the University and the Police Department. 3. Dispatch Police Officers to handle complaints. Research files, maintain various logs, complete vehicle release forms. The dispatcher must also monitor three radios and an alarm system, issue all equipment, and coordinate joint Coral Gables and University of Miami Police activities with the Coral Gables Police Dept. Dispatcher. 4.
Impact of Actions:
The dispatcher helps to maintain a safe and secure environment for the university community by dispatching Police to wherever they are needed. 5.
Personal Contacts:
The incumbent has frequent internal contact with students, faculty, staff and outside vendors to ensure efficient and optimum service. 6.
Scope of work:
Work activities affect safety of all persons at the University. 7. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education or Training:
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have literacy in a customized computer system.
Knowledge:
Will acquire full knowledge of university policies related to the Police Department and all responsibilities.
Skills:
Must display excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to type 25 - 30 words per minute and possess good voice diction.
Abilities:
Must be able to relate well at all levels and provide detailed instructions. Must have clear voice diction.
