You will coordinate drivers, trailers (dry van and intermodal chassis/containers), ramps, and customers to keep freight moving on time, safely, and in compliance with
DOT/FMCSA
regulations. Position Dispatcher - Intermodal / Linehaul / Backhaul Department Operations / Dispatch Reports to VP of Operations Location Secaucus, NJ Employment type Full-time, on-site Key Responsibilities The Dispatcher owns day-to-day load planning and driver coordination, and is the main point of contact between drivers, customers, ramps, and yards. Intermodal Dispatch drayage moves to and from rail ramps, ports, and terminals, including container and chassis pickups, returns, and pre-pulls. Track container availability, last free day, per diem, and demurrage; act early to avoid charges. Coordinate appointments, gate cutoffs, and chassis pool requirements with ramps and steamship lines. Linehaul and Backhaul Plan and assign linehaul loads by lane, driver availability, hours of service, and delivery windows. Source, book, and coordinate backhauls to reduce empty miles and improve revenue per truck. Balance outbound and return freight so trucks and trailers are positioned for the next load. Trailer Operations Manage trailer assignments for intermodal equipment, including drop-and-hook, pool trailers, and container/chassis pairings. Track trailer location, status, and condition; coordinate repairs and inspections with Safety when equipment is out of service. Communication and Reporting Communicate with drivers throughout the trip, and give customers timely status updates and ETAs. Resolve delays, breakdowns, missed appointments, and detention issues quickly, and document each one. Enter loads and driver activity accurately in Port-Pro and maintain load documentation (BOLs, PODs, interchange receipts, and EIRs). Support billing by confirming accessorials, detention, layover, and lumper charges. Required Qualifications Candidates must have hands-on dispatch experience in intermodal, linehaul, and backhaul freight, and working knowledge of the trailer types we run. [2+] years of dispatch experience in trucking or logistics, including intermodal drayage and over-the-road linehaul. Proven experience planning and booking backhauls to minimize deadhead miles.
Working knowledge of intermodal equipment:
dry vans, containers, chassis, and pool trailers, including how interchange and chassis pools work. Familiarity with rail ramps, ports, and terminals, and with the paperwork they require (interchange receipts, EIRs, delivery orders). Solid understanding of FMCSA hours-of-service rules and how they affect load planning. Experience using Port-Pro and load boards, and comfort with ELD and GPS tracking platforms. Strong communication skills with drivers, customers, and vendors, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Reliable, organized, and able to prioritize many moving loads at once. Experience dispatching in the Northeast corridor, including NJ/NY ports and rail ramps. Prior experience with drop-and-hook operations and trailer pool management. High school diploma or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications These are not required, but they will set a candidate apart. Familiarity with port and terminal appointment systems and chassis pool platforms. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus. Compliance and Safety The Dispatcher never plans a load that puts a driver out of compliance, and supports the company's safety program in every dispatch decision. Plan and assign loads within FMCSA hours-of-service limits, and never pressure a driver to violate HOS, speed, or rest requirements. Dispatch only drivers who are qualified, available, and legally able to run the load, and report any driver qualification or status concerns to Safety. Dispatch only equipment that is in service; keep trucks and trailers with open defects or overdue inspections out of rotation and notify Maintenance. Follow company procedures for accidents, breakdowns, roadside inspections, and cargo claims, and report each incident to Safety immediately. Keep dispatch records complete and accurate for audit and DOT review, including load documents, communication logs, and delay notes. Working Conditions This is a fast-paced, office-based role with extended screen time and frequent phone contact, and it requires flexibility because freight moves around the clock.
Schedule:
[Mon-Fri/5AM and 10-12 hr shift]. Freight moves 24/7, so on-call coverage, some weekends, and occasional holidays are part of the job.
Environment:
Dispatch office with multiple monitors, phones, and ELD tools.
Physical:
Sitting for long periods, using a computer and phone, and occasionally walking the yard.
Pace:
