Job Summary:
OVERVIEW OF POSITION
  • Performs communications, records maintenance, and various other duties in the communications center and/or the Sheriff's office.
Communications duties involve the use of multi-frequency radios, multi-line telephones, teletype, video and radio recording equipment, and electric door locks. Does related work as required.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Requires a valid Oregon state driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted for above preferences.
  • Must possess or obtain a DPSST Basic Telecommunication Certificate and EMD Certificate within one year of hire/appointment date.
  • Must pass a medical exam prior to attending DPSST
  • CPR and First Aid certificates within one year
  • Requires the successful completion of the Field Training Program
  • Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalency
  • Requires typing 40 pm
  • Pass a background check, to include criminal records. Felony and/or certain misdemeanor records, and/or dishonorable discharge from the military are all grounds for immediate disqualification
  • Work is performed in an office environment which may require color identification, hearing vocal conversations by phone, radio, and in person, keyboarding, sitting, walking, and lift up to fifty pounds.
Must maintain DPSST minimum physical requirements. Must have full use of both upper extremities.
ADDITIONAL INFO
  • This position must be willing to work 12-hour shift assignments, (four days on, four days off) and may be assigned to workday shift, swing shift or graveyard. Weekend and holiday work are both also required.
  • This is a certified, non-sworn position.
While the work is generally routine, it may be performed in stressful situations. Specific tasks are governed by established rules and regulations, policies, procedures, and statutes. Position works under supervision of a supervisor or higher. Activities are reviewed for adequacy of judgment, compliance with rules and regulations, policies and procedures, and achievement of results consistent with goals and objectives. The position is regularly required to deal with the public, with frequent exposure to confrontational language. Work is performed in an office setting. Work may be performed independently or in a team situation. Certain aspects of work assignments can result in significant legal ramifications if not performed properly.
DUTIES:
  • Operates telephone and radio equipment in order to receive and analyze incoming requests for service as pertain to law enforcement, fire, emergency medical, or other public services.
  • Elicits necessary information from reporting parties, callers, and responding personnel in order to determine the need for service, the type of service, where the service is to be performed, who needs the service and who is requesting the service.
  • Determines the classification of requests for service and the priority nature of the request.
  • Dispatches appropriate agencies and personnel to address the need for service.
