Primary Purpose:
Under basic supervision, answers emergency and non-emergency calls for service; takes information from callers and enters information into computer database; provides assistance and information to Waco ISD Police Department, emergency services agencies and general public. Perform routine office, secretarial, and clerical tasks.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Fluent in English required and Spanish preferred
Basic Telecommunicator License from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within 1 Year required;
National/Texas Crime Information Centers (NCIC/TCIC) and Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (TLETS) within 180 Days required; Must successfully complete any additional background checks required for the position, which may include a CJIS background check, federal background check, or other applicable screenings (e.g., FAA);
Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

Ability to interact, relate, and work well with students and adults from a variety of ethnic and social backgrounds
Possess an understanding of school safety, disciplinary rules and regulations
Ability to record information
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written)
Ability to pass required physical, psychiatric, and drug tests
Ability to maintain emotional control during high stress situations
Bonded as required by Texas Education Code §37.081(h)
Ability to use software to develop spreadsheets and databases, and perform word processing
Proficient keyboarding, file maintenance skills and 10-key skills
Experience with data entry and record keeping
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Problem solving skills
Detail oriented and ability to meet established deadlines
Experience
One to two years of clerical/data entry experience preferred
Previous dispatch or emergency services experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Answers emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, emergency medical assistance; determines appropriate call classification and priority.
- Answers incoming emergency calls: interviews and calms callers and gathers details; evaluates information, prioritizes calls, determines actions required and appropriate response; dispatches emergency responders and resources; relays pertinent information to law enforcement and school district personnel in a concise, organized, and understandable manner; monitors radio channels and provides immediate information and assistance.
- Follows WISD PD procedures to provide assistance and information to emergency services personnel and general public; notifies other state, federal and regional agencies as needed.
- Enters call information into Computer Aided Dispatch records management system; tracks a variety of law enforcement and public safety agency resources, personnel, and incidents.
- Provides detailed call information to WISD PD Officers, maintains status and awareness of all public safety unit locations; monitors message traffic and relays information to assure that responders; safety is top priority; notifies key WISD PD personnel on critical incidents.
- Performs inquiries and criminal history checks for Officers through National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (TLETS).
- Searches state and national data bases at Officers request; updates warrant information.
- Gathers information on non-emergency calls and responds appropriately; provides information, instructions, and assistance to the public within scope of authority and training.
- Maintains and updates a variety of computer databases, resource management systems and files; enters, edits, and retrieves data and prepares reports.
- Prepares accurate and detailed reports and required paperwork.
- Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the Police Department by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
- May be required to respond afterhours, including holidays and weekends, in the event of a departmental or District-wide emergency.
- Routinely monitors district cameras.
- Possess an understanding of school safety, disciplinary rules and regulations.
- Ability to pass required physical, psychiatric, and drug tests.
- Proficient keyboarding, file maintenance skills and 10-key skills.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Equipment used:
Personal computer, district data management system, printer, typewriter, multi-line phone system, copier, fax machine, district vehicles that are security and/or police equipped, , alarm systems, fire extinguishers, and security equipment is possible.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Constant student, district personnel, visitors and other members of the public contact. Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer. Administrative office environment with interruptions, hectic pace, and short deadlines. Sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, and reaching. Occasional lifting and moving of moderate to heavy objects. Strenuous walking, standing, and/or climbing. Mobility to direct traffic (pedestrian or vehicle); specific hearing and visual requirements; ability to control sudden or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. May be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions including violent and armed confrontations.

Pursuant to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) CJIS Security Policy, police dispatchers are required to undergo both a Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and FBI criminal fingerprint background check.
