Job Description

General Description Facilities Assistants are responsible for performing a variety of duties that include maintaining the cleanliness of library facilities; setting up meeting rooms; performing basic maintenance tasks such as light plumbing, equipment repair, and painting; and participating in the care and maintenance of library vehicles, grounds, and landscaping areas. Facilities Assistants operate as a team under the supervision of the Facilities Manager to ensure library facilities and premises are a clean and safe environment in support of the goals and objectives of the Vigo County Public Library.
Job Functions Essential Functions Performed Daily :
Clean multiple public and staff restrooms throughout the workday; including toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, floors, and restock with paper products in assigned areas of VCPL facilities. Dust furniture in offices and common areas and perform general janitorial duties in assigned areas of VCPL facilities. Clean water fountains and sink and counter areas in public and staff areas and restock with paper towels. Dust mop, sweep, wet mop floors, and vacuum carpet. Wash windows in library entrance and doors, office doors, department/sliding doors, etc. Trash removal from offices and public areas of the library. Clean Staff Break Room. Perform general cleaning assignments as directed by the Facilities Manager. Move tables and chairs into different set-up arrangements for meeting rooms as needed and clean meeting rooms as part of daily cleaning assignment. Check email and phone messages frequently for new maintenance requests and re-prioritize workload as necessary in communications with the Facilities Manager.
Essential Functions Performed Periodically :
Wash woodwork and walls. Strip and wax floors assigned. Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes. Assist with unpacking, transporting, and the transfer of furniture and equipment between departments and other areas of the library. Assist with monthly preventative maintenance on the following equipment: floor care machines, lawn care machines, HVAC supply fans/filters, air compressor, hot water circulating pump, and overhead doors. Assist with adding salt to the water softener and chemicals to the cooling tower water weekly as directed. Assist with repairing and painting walls. Clean interior and exterior of library vehicles weekly as assigned. Assist with snow removal and spreading ice melt. Operate security system in the absence of Facilities Manager. May be asked to substitute for other shift facilities personnel including assisting with setups for programs and events sponsored by VCPL. Complete other duties as assigned.
Additional Functions Performed Periodically :
May be asked to assist in responding to fire and security alarms. Delivery of library materials and perform janitorial duties at branch library locations as needed/assigned. Attend library meetings and other in-service training sessions.

Maintain confidentiality and privacy of library customer information and transactions. Physical and Cognitive Requirements Ability to read, write and understand written and verbal instructions. Ability to effectively communicate. Ability to remain calm during emergency situations. Ability to lift items ranging from 25-50 pounds. Ability to push/move loads from 25-150 pounds. Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and/or with exposure to outdoor elements. Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. Ability to reach heights up to six feet and bend to floor levels utilizing step stool or step ladder; ability to climb a ladder up to 15 feet. Ability to work effectively with the public and staff. Interactions Reports to the Facilities Manager and indirectly to the Director of Support Services. Regular direct contact with co-workers in Facilities Department. Frequent contact with other library staff members regarding repair and maintenance duties. Regular contact with library customers. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous janitorial and/or building maintenance experience highly desirable. Ability to work independently and maintain efficient workflow required. Ability to follow instructions and read directions. Ability to use standard cleaning and maintenance equipment. Ability to lift 25-50 pounds. Knowledge of janitorial procedures. Ability to interact as a team member in a multicultural environment required. High degree of resourcefulness, tact, patience, and demonstrated good judgment required. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community required. Ability to project friendliness, helpfulness, and positivity required. Ability to work morning, afternoon, and or evening/weekends when needed. Work Environment Mild to moderate exposure to dust, depending on work area. Will face demands from the public and staff; patience and tact required. Temperature varies, depending on work area or assignment. Exposure to outside elements and extreme outdoor temperatures depending on assignment. Repetitive lifting will occur in some assignments on an intermittent basis. Noise level varies, depending on maintenance activity being performed. updated May 12, 2026

8:15am-5:15pm This role is scheduled for 24.00 hours per week. This position is eligible to participate in the low-cost dental and vision plans, accrues sick and vacation hours, is eligible for 11 paid holidays per year, and has access to an employee assistance plan (EAP). Additionally, this role is eligible for tuition and textbook reimbursement in accordance with the VCPL Staff Development Policy.
