Position Director of Facilities & Capital Projects Department Facilities Available July 2026 Detroit Country Day School is a private, independent, co-educational, non-denominational, preschool through grade 12, college preparatory school focused on a well-rounded liberal arts education. Position Summary The Director of Facilities & Capital Projects provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the school's physical infrastructure and built environment. This role is responsible for maintaining safe, efficient, and well-functioning campus facilities while leading long-range capital planning, major renovation projects, and stewardship of institutional assets. The Director ensures that daily maintenance operations align with long-term campus planning priorities and supports the school's mission through effective management of facilities resources and capital investments. This position reports directly to the Chief Financial & Operations Officer (CFOO). Primary Responsibilities Facilities Operations Provide leadership and oversight of all building maintenance operations across all locations. Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs to ensure safe and reliable facility operations. Supervise grounds maintenance operations, including landscaping, athletic fields support, and seasonal campus needs. Ensure facilities operate in compliance with applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. Develop and implement operational standards and performance expectations for facilities staff. Utilities & Infrastructure Management Oversee campus utilities systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and energy infrastructure. Monitor and analyze utility usage and identify opportunities for operational efficiency and cost management. Support sustainability and energy management initiatives where appropriate. Capital Planning & Project Management Lead planning and execution of capital improvement and renovation projects. Collaborate with school leadership on long-range facilities planning and prioritization of capital investments. Manage relationships with architects, engineers, contractors, and external consultants. Oversee project timelines, budgets, and quality control throughout project lifecycles. Provide regular reporting on capital project status and financial performance. Deferred Maintenance & Asset Stewardship Develop and maintain a comprehensive deferred maintenance plan. Align maintenance planning with institutional budgeting and long-term financial strategy. Maintain accurate facilities condition data to support capital forecasting. Vendor & Contract Management Oversee procurement and management of facilities-related vendors and service contracts. Lead competitive bidding processes and contract evaluations. Ensure vendor performance meets institutional expectations for quality and service. Leadership Responsibilities Supervise facilities and grounds personnel. Promote a culture of accountability, safety, collaboration, and service. Establish clear workflows, maintenance standards, and operational procedures. Collaborate closely with Auxiliary Services leadership to support school programming needs. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred. Minimum 7-10 years of progressive facilities or operations leadership experience. Demonstrated experience managing capital construction or renovation projects. Strong financial and budget management skills. Experience in educational, institutional, or multi-facility environments preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to move throughout campus facilities to coordinate and oversee the use of spaces for academic programs, student activities, and external partnerships. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods when monitoring events, meetings, or facility operations. Ability to occasionally lift or move materials up to approximately 15-20 pounds, such as event supplies, signage, or small equipment. Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a computer, phone, and printer, and to review digital and printed documents. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to work in a variety of campus environments, including offices, indoor event spaces, and outdoor areas. Strategic Impact This role ensures responsible stewardship of the school's physical assets while strengthening alignment between operational maintenance, capital investment, and long-term campus planning.
