Job Description

The University of Montana invites applications for an Assistant Director of Housing Facilities and Custodial Operations for UM Housing . The Assistant Director provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for custodial services across UM Housing's residence halls, apartments, and support facilities. Reporting to the Associate Director of Housing Facilities, the position leads a multi-level custodial organization and collaborates on broader facilities operations, planning, technology, project coordination, operational readiness, and organizational improvement efforts across the Housing system. Lead strategic planning and continuous improvement for Housing custodial operations, aligning services with departmental goals and the residential experience Serve as a member of the Housing Facilities leadership team and extended department leadership team and collaborate on facilities planning, operational readiness, project coordination, technology initiatives, and department-wide process improvement efforts. Provide organizational leadership and oversight for custodial supervisors, managers, technicians, specialists, associates, and seasonal staff Develop workforce strategies, including staffing models, recruitment, training, employee development, performance management, and succession planning Establish and implement custodial service standards, quality assurance programs, inspection processes, and accountability systems using industry standards and best practices Oversee major operational cycles and projects, including residence hall and apartment turnovers, deep-cleaning initiatives, operational readiness, and coordination with facilities activities Lead the effective use of custodial technology, work management systems, reporting tools, performance metrics, and other resources to improve workflows and service delivery Analyze operational data and assessment results to inform staffing, resource allocation, performance, planning, and continuous improvement Manage operational resources, including budgets, forecasting, inventory, supplies, and equipment, to support effective and efficient service delivery Collaborate with Housing departments and campus partners to coordinate custodial services, address operational needs, and advance shared priorities Support emergency response and organizational initiatives while ensuring consistent operational coverage, accountability, communication, and service quality High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in custodial operations, facilities operations, facilities management, building services, housing operations, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience Two (2) years of supervisory or management experience, including responsibility for employee training, performance management, staff development, operational planning, and workforce oversight Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Montana driver's license Experience developing, implementing, and improving operational procedures, work processes, service standards, quality assurance programs, and accountability systems Experience using technology and operational systems to manage workflows, track performance, support reporting, and inform decision-making Knowledge of custodial operations, cleaning methods, equipment, products, safety practices, and applicable industry standards in residential, student housing, or similar environments Knowledge of operational planning, workload management, staffing, project coordination, and effective service delivery in complex environments Demonstrated ability to analyze operational challenges and data, identify trends and priorities, develop solutions, manage multiple projects, and drive continuous improvement Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and build collaborative relationships with employees, residents, students, vendors, contractors, campus partners, and diverse stakeholders Demonstrated leadership, sound judgment, and decision-making skills, including the ability to interpret and apply policies, agreements, safety requirements, and regulations while promoting accountability, customer service, employee development, innovation, and a positive workplace culture Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, Construction Management, Public Administration, Higher Education, or a related field Experience leading custodial operations as part of a broader facilities, maintenance, property management, healthcare, hospitality, higher education, or institutional operations environment. Demonstrated success modernizing operations through industry standards, technology, process improvement, workforce development, performance metrics, quality assurance, and accountability systems Experience leading multi-level teams, including supervisors, and developing staffing models, training programs, professional development, succession planning, and leadership development strategies Knowledge of custodial standards, service levels, benchmarking, operational assessments, quality assurance, and the use of data to inform staffing, resource allocation, performance, and continuous improvement Experience managing operational resources, including budgets, forecasting, procurement, inventory, cost control, and large-scale projects such as facility turnovers, deep-cleaning programs, occupancy transitions, or capital improvements Demonstrated ability to build collaborative partnerships, navigate diverse stakeholder and labor environments, and foster inclusive, customer-focused teams committed to accountability, engagement, professional growth, and operational excellence Position is full-time, 1.0FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
