This is not a desk-only management position. We are looking for someone who is highly visible throughout the building, regularly walks the hallways and grounds, notices problems before they are reported, and follows through until they are resolved. The right person will take real responsibility for the building and treat it as if it were their own property. This includes supervising maintenance and cleaning staff, ensuring scheduled work is being completed properly and on time, diagnosing building and equipment problems, performing smaller repairs when practical, and determining when an outside contractor is necessary. Responsibilities Take day-to-day ownership of the condition, cleanliness, maintenance, and operation of the school campus. Regularly walk the building and grounds to identify maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and operational issues before they become larger problems. Supervise maintenance and custodial/cleaning staff and ensure employees are where they are scheduled to be and completing assigned work properly. Monitor cleaning schedules and regularly inspect bathrooms, hallways, classrooms, common areas, entrances, grounds, and other areas for quality and consistency. Address small or immediate issues personally when practical, including minor repairs or spot cleaning rather than simply passing every task to another employee. Diagnose maintenance problems involving plumbing, electrical, HVAC, appliances, doors, fixtures, and other building systems. Determine whether repairs can reasonably be handled by in-house maintenance staff or require a qualified outside contractor. Direct and follow up with maintenance staff to ensure repairs are completed correctly and promptly. Coordinate with plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, and other contractors when outside service is required. Obtain estimates and evaluate proposed repairs so management can make informed decisions before approving significant expenses. Oversee preventive maintenance and ensure equipment and building systems are regularly inspected and serviced. Identify recurring problems and develop practical solutions rather than repeatedly addressing the same symptoms. Monitor building safety and immediately address hazards or conditions requiring attention. Manage maintenance projects and ensure contractors complete work properly and on schedule. Maintain organized records of repairs, inspections, preventive maintenance, and outstanding facility issues. Communicate clearly with school administration regarding significant issues, recommended repairs, and upcoming facility needs. Remain willing to assist wherever needed during urgent or unusual situations. Qualifications Previous experience in facilities management, building maintenance, property maintenance, building operations, or a similar hands-on supervisory role. Strong practical knowledge of building maintenance and repair. Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general building issues. Ability to recognize when a repair can be handled in-house and when a licensed or specialized contractor is required. Experience supervising maintenance, custodial, cleaning, or similar employees. Strong organizational and follow-through skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and ensure tasks are completed without constant supervision. Comfortable working both as a manager and hands-on when circumstances require it. Strong judgment and problem-solving ability. Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with employees, vendors, contractors, and school administration. Basic computer skills for email, recordkeeping, schedules, and maintenance tracking. Relevant trade experience or certifications in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical systems, or building maintenance are a plus but are not required. conversational spanish for communicating with custodial staff. What We Are Looking For We are looking for someone who takes ownership. If you see a problem, you address it. If a bathroom is not being cleaned properly, you follow up. If something breaks, you investigate the cause and determine the most practical solution. If a small issue can be fixed immediately, you are willing to take care of it yourself. The successful candidate will combine management ability, practical building knowledge, attention to detail, and a hands-on attitude to keep the school running smoothly every day.
