Executive Director, Sobrius Reports to: VP of Operations or Chief Executive Officer Employment type: Full-time, exempt
Location:
Sobrius, Galax, VA Position Summary The Executive Director provides overall leadership for Sobrius-Galax, a residential / outpatient addiction treatment program. This role oversees clinical, operational, financial, and regulatory functions so that patients receive safe, evidence-based, compassionate care. The Executive Director builds a strong organizational culture, maintains licensure and accreditation, drives census and financial performance, and represents the facility in the recovery community and with referral partners, payers, and regulators. Key Responsibilities Leadership and Strategy Set and carry out the facility's strategic plan, annual goals, and growth in line with the organization's mission and vision. Build a culture of accountability, trauma-informed care, and respect for patients, families, and staff. Lead the senior team, including the Clinical Director, Nurse Supervisor, and Program Managers. Clinical Quality and Patient Safety Partner with the Medical and Clinical Directors to make sure treatment follows ASAM criteria and evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and medication-assisted treatment. Collaborate with the Compliance Department to manage quality improvement, incident reporting, risk management, and patient grievance processes, and act on outcome data. Make sure admissions, level-of-care placement, discharge planning, and aftercare coordination are clinically appropriate and well documented. Regulatory Compliance and Accreditation Maintain all state licenses and certifications and keep the facility survey-ready for The Joint Commission or CARF. Ensure compliance with
HIPAA, 42 CFR
Part 2, SAMHSA, and OSHA. Complete tasks related to audits, surveys, and corrective action plans. Financial and Operational Management Monitoring census, and key performance indicators. Manage facilities, safety, dietary, housekeeping, and vendor relationships so the environment is clean, safe, and therapeutic. Workforce Development Recruit, retain, and develop qualified staff, and ensure appropriate staffing ratios and credentialing. Oversee training, clinical supervision structures, performance evaluations, and staff wellness efforts to reduce burnout and turnover. Qualifications Required Master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, healthcare administration, public health, or a related field. At least 5-7 years of experience in behavioral health or substance use disorder treatment, including 3+ years in a senior leadership role with budget and P&L responsibility. Solid working knowledge of state licensing rules, accreditation standards, ASAM criteria, and confidentiality regulations (HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2). Proven record of managing census, financial results, and multidisciplinary teams. Preferred Clinical licensure such as LCSW, LPC, LMFT, LCADC, or equivalent, or a nursing license with behavioral health leadership background. Experience with Joint Commission or CARF surveys, MAT programs, and electronic health record systems (e.g., Kipu, Alleva, Ease, Sunwave, Netsmart). Skills and Competencies The ideal candidate is a steady, ethical leader who communicates clearly with staff, patients, families, and leadership. Strong candidates combine sound business judgment and data-driven decision-making with deep empathy for people affected by addiction, and they stay calm and decisive in crises. Working Conditions This position works primarily on-site at a treatment facility and requires availability after hours and on weekends for emergencies or administrative on-call coverage. Some local travel to meet referral partners and attend community events is expected. Compensation and Benefits $85,000 - $115,000, plus performance incentives. Benefits include health, dental, vision, 401(k)with match, PTO, and licensure support, loan-forgiveness eligibility if applicable.
