Full-time employment, 40 hours per week. Non-exempt under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Description:
The Facilities Technical Specialist is an advanced technical role within the Facilities team and serves as a resource for maintenance operations, troubleshooting, repairs, and special projects. This position leads and executes complex maintenance projects, provides technical guidance and hands-on training to Facilities staff, and serves as a mentor to support the development of team members technical skills and knowledge. This role serves as a go-to resource for resolving complex issues across the Gardens buildings, equipment, and infrastructure and contributes to the continuous improvement of maintenance practices, safety, and operational efficiency. The schedule for this position is generally dayshift and will require weekend availability.
Essential Functions:
- Lead and execute large-scale maintenance and repair projects, including coordinating with external contractors and vendors as needed, and provide technical direction to Facilities staff participating in project work.
- Serve as a primary technical resource for complex troubleshooting and repairs, independently documenting and resolving issues across building systems, equipment, and infrastructure. Provide hands-on guidance, instruction, and mentoring to other Facilities technicians to support the development of technical knowledge and skills.
- Develop, prioritize, and direct Facilities staff to carry out departmental work plans and preventive maintenance schedules to maximize operational efficiency, asset longevity, and service quality.
- Collaborate with Facilities Supervisors to enhance and implement preventive maintenance programs, maintain regulatory compliance with applicable requirements (e.g., OSHA and safety codes), and support capital planning and budgeting.
- Attend Facilities Manager meetings and contribute to discussions regarding ongoing projects, maintenance priorities, staffing needs, safety concerns, and departmental operations.
- Provide input and recommendations on hiring, performance management, corrective action, and employee separation decisions.
- Conduct regular facility and equipment inspections to proactively identify and address maintenance needs, and maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, preventive maintenance, and completed work.
- Partner with the Director of Facilities & Training to identify hands-on training opportunities within planned maintenance projects and develop and maintain technical training materials and resources for Facilities staff.
- Support the development and implementation of a departmental mentoring program by providing technical mentorship, sharing knowledge and best practices, and helping Facilities technicians strengthen their technical skills and proficiency.
- Provide technical direction to Facilities staff, coordinating work assignments, project priorities, schedules, and resource needs. Responsible to ensure the work assignments are completed.
- Provide temporary technical and operational leadership during emergencies or periods when Facilities Supervisory coverage is unavailable, as assigned, without assuming ongoing supervisory responsibility for Facilities personnel.
- Perform routine maintenance on Garden vehicles and equipment and ensure maintenance and inspection records are kept current.
- Perform required Garden safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, locating and operating firefighting equipment, and using appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Set up rooms for events, staff meetings, education classes, and other scheduled activities according to requested layouts.
- Qualify on and safely operate restricted-use equipment, including but not limited to cement saws, metal chop saws, and spot-welding equipment, as trained and authorized.
- Operate heavy equipment, including forklifts, skid steers, front-end loaders, large aerial lifts, and other equipment as trained and authorized.
- Operate golf carts and perform preventive maintenance, including checking battery levels, tire pressure, fuel levels, and other routine maintenance needs; provide towing assistance as needed.
- Complete painting, surface preparation, and related maintenance work in office spaces and throughout the Garden.
- Perform custodial duties, including cleaning restrooms, operating floor-cleaning equipment, using power washers, changing light bulbs, laundering items, and other related tasks as needed.
- Assist with Garden-wide special events and perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Physical Functions:
- Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must have the ability to work outside for 8 hours in heat, cold or light rain and can continuously walk, stand, bend, twist and/or stoop.
- Must have the ability to push, pull and perform manual labor during working hours.
- Must have the ability to work on ladders for extended periods.
- Must have the ability to operate heavy equipment and have the ability to drive a golf cart.
Qualifications:
- Schedule subject to Garden needs; weekends are required.
- 18 years of age or older with valid driver's license and proof of insurance required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance or related fields.
- Minimum of one year supervisory experience is preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or certifications preferred.
- Strong experience in electrical, plumbing, or carpentry highly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve complex maintenance, equipment, and building system issues.
- Demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships, communicate technical information effectively, and mentor and coach employees through hands-on instruction, constructive feedback, and encouragement.
- Ability to effectively demonstrate and explain technical procedures, equipment operation, maintenance practices, and safety requirements to employees with varying levels of experience.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple maintenance projects, tasks, and resources while meeting deadlines and maintaining quality standards.
- Working knowledge of applicable workplace safety regulations, maintenance standards, and safe work practices, including OSHA requirements and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and lead by example.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Relevant technical certifications or licenses preferred.
