Yard Forklift OperatorJob Summary The Yard Forklift Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently moving, loading, unloading, staging, and organizing steel, materials, equipment, and finished products throughout the C&J Equipment Manufacturing yard and production facilities. This position plays an important role in keeping manufacturing operations running efficiently by ensuring materials are available where and when they are needed. The Yard Forklift Operator must operate equipment safely, maintain accurate material identification, protect company property and products, and communicate effectively with Production, Shipping, Receiving, Welding, Fabrication, and Yard personnel. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Safely operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment to move steel, components, materials, and finished products. Load and unload trucks, trailers, and material deliveries. Move steel and other materials between the yard, warehouse, and manufacturing areas. Stage materials for production according to work orders, schedules, and supervisor direction. Organize and maintain designated yard and material storage areas. Verify material identification, quantities, dimensions, and locations when moving or staging materials. Safely handle long, oversized, heavy, and irregularly shaped steel components. Assist with loading finished products and fabricated equipment for shipment. Secure materials and loads appropriately before transportation or shipment. Inspect forklifts and other equipment before each shift and report maintenance or safety concerns. Operate equipment within established capacity and safety limits. Maintain awareness of pedestrians, vehicles, overhead cranes, moving equipment, and other hazards. Communicate with supervisors and coworkers to coordinate material movement and production priorities. Keep travel paths, staging areas, and work areas clean and free of unnecessary hazards. Assist with inventory control and material identification as directed. Help locate and retrieve materials needed by production departments. Follow all company policies, safety procedures, and required PPE requirements. Report damaged materials, equipment problems, spills, unsafe conditions, and other concerns to supervision. Perform general yard and material-handling duties as assigned. Safety Responsibilities Safety is a primary responsibility of the Yard Forklift Operator.
The employee must:
Perform required pre-use forklift inspections. Operate forklifts and other equipment in accordance with training and company procedures. Maintain safe speeds and appropriate clearance around people, structures, vehicles, and equipment. Use seat belts and required PPE. Follow established pedestrian and traffic-control procedures. Maintain safe distances from suspended loads and overhead lifting operations. Never exceed equipment capacity or operate equipment outside its intended use. Immediately report unsafe conditions, near misses, property damage, or injuries. Qualifications Previous forklift experience in a manufacturing, steel fabrication, construction, warehouse, or industrial environment preferred. Current forklift certification preferred; company training/certification may be provided as applicable. Experience handling steel, pipe, structural components, or other heavy materials is a plus. Ability to safely operate forklifts around large and irregularly shaped loads. Ability to read and understand basic work instructions, material tags, and production documentation. Basic measurement and identification skills. Strong awareness of surroundings and commitment to workplace safety. Dependable attendance and punctuality. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers. Ability to work independently while supporting a team-oriented production environment. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for extended periods. Ability to frequently walk throughout the yard and manufacturing facility. Ability to climb on and off forklifts and other equipment. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach as required. Ability to work around heavy steel and large fabricated components. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to wear required PPE throughout the workday. Ability to work safely in areas with noise, dust, welding activity, heavy equipment, and industrial traffic. Work Environment The Yard Forklift Operator works in an active steel manufacturing and fabrication environment, including outdoor yards, material storage areas, shipping and receiving areas, and production facilities. The position requires constant awareness of moving equipment, heavy steel, forklifts, cranes, trucks, and other industrial activities. Performance Expectations The successful Yard Forklift Operator will: Put safety first in every operation. Maintain accurate and organized material staging. Operate forklifts and equipment responsibly and efficiently. Minimize material damage and prevent unnecessary product loss. Support production schedules by delivering materials where they are needed.
