Full Job Description Organization Overview:
The Rhode Island Free Clinic (www.rifreeclinic.org) is nationally recognized for its volunteer/community partner model. In 2025 the Clinic mobilized an active statewide corps of over 450 medical volunteers, support professionals, and community partners throughout RI to provide over 6,400 patient visits and serve as a medical home to uninsured, low-income RI adults. We believe in strengthening our community by giving people resources and education to help themselves. The Clinic also serves as a training site for aspiring healthcare professionals. Services and training are provided at the Clinic's state-of-the-art, 8,000 square foot facility in Providence, and around RI at sites of collaborating partners.
Position Overview:
The Rhode Island Free Clinic seeks a highly motivated Grants & Fundraising AmeriCorps VISTA for a one-year, full-time AmeriCorps VISTA service opportunity focused on strengthening the Clinic's long-term fundraising capacity. The VISTA will support grant research, proposal development, funder outreach, and the creation of reusable grant materials. This role will also assist with individual fundraising efforts, donor engagement, campaigns, sponsorship outreach, and in-person and virtual fundraising events. Building on the service of previous VISTA members, this position will help identify and pursue local, state, federal, corporate, foundation, and private funding opportunities that align with the Clinic's mission and program needs. This is an AmeriCorps VISTA national service position , not a traditional staff role, and offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit fundraising and development while helping expand access to healthcare for low-income, uninsured Rhode Islanders. DUTIES Research and identify new local, state, federal, corporate, foundation, and private funding opportunities. Support grant writing and proposal development aligned with organizational priorities and program needs. Gather and organize information needed for grant applications, including program descriptions, budgets, outcomes, and supporting materials. Develop reusable grant language, templates, attachments, and other resources to strengthen future submissions. Maintain and strengthen grant tracking systems, including funders, deadlines, requirements, reports, and submission status. Support individual fundraising efforts, donor engagement, fundraising campaigns, and outreach to current and prospective supporters. Assist with in-person and virtual fundraising events, including timelines, sponsorship outreach, materials, guest communications, and follow-up. Identify opportunities for event sponsorships and community partnerships. Draft donor communications, sponsorship materials, campaign messaging, and other fundraising content. Collaborate with Clinic staff and fellow VISTA members to support coordinated and sustainable fundraising efforts. Participate in relevant community meetings, webinars, and professional development opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Commitment to the Clinic's mission and service to low-income, uninsured adults. Strong interest in grant writing, nonprofit fundraising, individual giving, and/or community health. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong research, organizational, and time-management skills. Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Creative, personable, and mission-driven approach to service. Prior experience with grant writing, fundraising, donor engagement, event planning, nonprofit work, or community engagement is a plus, but not required.
