About the Middle East Institute The Middle East Institute (MEI) is the leading Washington-based institution dedicated solely to the study of the Middle East. A nonpartisan, integrated think tank, MEI works to advance the U.S.-Middle East relationship through a whole-of-society approach that includes policy, education, and cultural programming. Duties and Responsibilities Establish an organization-wide understanding of the importance and impact of building a comprehensive development function. Design and implement plans to diversify funding and establish sustainable funding models. Partner with the Board and senior management to develop and institutionalize a comprehensive development strategy. Build and lead a development team and ensure that stewardship is embedded throughout the Institute. Develop plans, specific targets, and performance metrics through which the organization can measure success. Lead and coordinate fundraising efforts to achieve established targets. Strengthen the organization's long-term financial sustainability. Competencies and Areas of Expertise Thorough understanding of the components required to ensure resource sustainability through development and advancement. Experience building and engaging boards that include significant direct and indirect contributors. Demonstrated success developing and leading major-gift campaigns, particularly those involving commercial entities. Experience researching and developing sophisticated communications strategies to support fundraising efforts. Working knowledge of the Middle East and willingness to travel and engage with prospective funders and donors throughout the region. Familiarity with or experience preparing and submitting applications for government and foundation grants. Demonstrated success cultivating relationships and securing major gifts from corporations, foundations, prominent individuals, and organizations aligned with specific issues, topics, or business interests. Foreign-language proficiency and/or experience traveling or living in the Middle East is preferred but not required. Personality Traits and Characteristics Self-motivated with a builder's mindset.
