Position Information Job Title Temporary On-Call Federal Government Contracting Counselor
Job Summary The Federal Government Contracting Counselor is a member of the Schoolcraft College APEX Accelerator team, which helps strengthen and grow the government industrial base. This role provides assistance to businesses, entrepreneurs, and technology start-ups by helping them understand the government marketplace, identify contracting opportunities, strengthen procurement readiness, and navigate registrations, certifications, solicitation requirements, proposal development, compliance considerations, and post-award responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills, an approachable and professional presence, and the ability to build trust with businesses at varying levels of government contracting experience. This position requires skillful questioning, active listening, and the ability to assess client needs and explain complex procurement topics in plain language. This is a temporary on-call position through 2026, and will work 10-12 hours a week with a hybrid work schedule preferred. Remote work may be considered based on program needs and candidate qualifications. Opportunities to travel locally to events and conferences.
Job Duties Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Assess businesses, entrepreneurs, and technology start-ups for readiness, capability, and fit for government contracting opportunities.
Provide one-on-one counseling and technical assistance on government market research, agency targeting, prime contractor opportunities, NAICS codes, procurement forecasts, bid opportunities, and award history.
Assist clients with capability statements, government marketing strategies, solicitation reviews, subcontracting opportunities, and post-award responsibilities.
Provide counseling on key federal and defense contracting topics, including cybersecurity awareness, foreign ownership, control or influence, mentor-protégé programs, innovation pathways for dual-use technologies, and defense workforce sustainment.
Maintain accurate client records, documentation, referrals, outcomes, and reporting data in the program CRM/database.
Stay current on procurement-related changes, participate in professional development, and complete other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in a related area.
Two (2) years of appropriate experience in a related field.
Ability to relate well with diverse segments of business, industry, and education. Preferred Qualifications Able to travel to outreach events and professional conferences. Physical Requirements Salary $35/hour
