Youth Peer Advocate (Part-Time, Grant Employee)

Job Description

The Town of Stratford is seeking experienced candidates to fill the position of Youth Peer Advocate (Part-Time, Grant Employee)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This part-time position (8-10 hours/week) is an opportunity for a local youth or young adult to provide transformational leadership and support to young people in Stratford. The Youth Peer Advocate will promote mental health and substance use prevention through peer leadership, training, and advocacy. The position is funded through the Building Resilient Youth & Communities With Prevention (BRYC) grant, a new 5-year project that aims to prevent underage alcohol and cannabis use in Stratford. The position will renew annually contingent on grant funding.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position will report to the Prevention Coordinator.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
  • Recruit and engage Stratford youth and young adults in coalition work through the Stratford Partnership for Youth and Families (SPYF).
  • Attend and support SPYF-related youth activities, which may include making presentations, collaborating to create campaigns, and sharing information and resources.
  • Attend statewide monthly Youth Advisory Board (YAB) meetings, subcommittee meetings, and trainings to be able to serve as a resource in Stratford and at the state level.
  • Serve as a role model and advocate to youth and young adults, providing peer education and awareness.
  • Attend any required DMHAS meetings as well as Community Services staff meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience leading youth clubs or activities
  • Experience with mental health promotion and substance use prevention preferred
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Per grant requirements, must be between the ages of 16-24
  • Per grant requirements, knowledge of Stratford community required SALARY
  • $18- $20/ hour depending on experience Applications can be found on the Town's website, www.
