Overview Join our dedicated sanitary / conservancy district team as a Field Crew Personnel (Sanitary Laborer) and play a vital role in maintaining clean, safe, and healthy communities. In this crucial position, you'll operate various types of commercial trucks, including but not limited to Jet Truck and Heavy Equipment, to clean, clear, and maintain Merrillville Conservancy Districts lines and underground pipes. Your commitment to safety, customer service, and environmental responsibility will help ensure our Freeholders common areas are in clean and sanitary condition. Responsibilities Pre-hire Drug Screening (mandatory) Current CDL (preferred) Cleans and maintains sewers and like structures. Inspections of sewer systems Operate Jet Truck (preferred) Operates manual, handheld, and power equipment. Ensures proper handling of hazardous materials. Confined space certified (preferred) Follow all safety procedures related to heavy lifting, outdoor work conditions, and hazardous materials handling to prevent accidents or injuries Proper record retention (i.e. maintenance, repair, readings) Lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Call-out availability. Property maintenance Skills Experience operating commercial trucks Strong knowledge of solid waste management practices and municipal waste collection procedures Familiarity with traffic laws, DOT regulations, air brake systems, and state transportation rules governing commercial driving Mechanical aptitude for inspecting trucks, understanding basic repairs, and recognizing potential safety issues Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and efficiently in indoor and outdoor environments under varying weather conditions Excellent driving skills with a focus on defensive driving techniques to ensure safety for yourself and others on the road Effective communication skills for interacting with team members and the public while maintaining professionalism Customer service skills Communicate effectively Ability to read, write, comprehend, and act upon verbal and written instructions, policies and procedures.
