Duties Description The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in the Genesee Region is seeking a Trail Laborer to assist in maintaining and enhancing the trail systems within Letchworth State Park and the Genesee Region. The Trail Laborer will work as part of a team to perform a wide range of trail maintenance and construction tasks. The Trail Laborer will report directly to the assigned Park Supervisor 1, SG-11, or other higher-level staff. The position will work with up to four trail crew members and assist volunteer group projects. This is a 40 hour/week, Monday - Thursday, seasonal position. The typical workday will be 7:00am - 5:30pm, with a 30-minute lunch. Housing is not provided. Primary duties include, but are not limited to: Construct dimensional lumber stairs, retaining walls, bridges, and boardwalks. Construct new trails and improve existing tread and drainage systems. Perform regular upkeep on stone staircases and retaining walls. Provide general maintenance for park facilities. Remove hazards such as fallen trees and debris using chainsaws or other tools. Groom winter trails and remove risk trees in coordination with NYS Parks operations staff during the off-season. Work on uneven and steep terrain, carry and move tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Operate both hand and power tools in various outdoor environments and weather conditions. OPERATING NEEDS

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment. Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor and to lift up to 100 pounds. Must have the ability to work on uneven and steep terrain. Must have experience or familiarity with using hand tools, power tools, and performing/troubleshooting basic tool maintenance.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Two years of experience with outdoor labor, particularly trail maintenance and construction or any of the following: dry stone masonry, carpentry, landscaping, general construction. Experience operating a chainsaw. Experience operating equipment such as skid steers, mini-excavators, and Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs).
