Fire Watch/Laborer

Firewatch Job Summary Observes for sparks and flames during welding and works as a laborer to assist trades; sweeps, hoses and performs tasks related to clean up on-board ship, in drydock, on piers and throughout the shipyard. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Following certifications needed:

OSHA 10, Firewatch, VSRA Hot Work, VSRA Safety, Confined Spaces and Respirator fit test. Firewatch Qualification Standards Minimum of 6 months Firewatch experience. Ability to read and write ( in English) and understand verbal instructions required. Requires observation skills, ability to respond quickly, housekeeping skills, good judgement and on-going safety awareness. Must be able to access and move around ship safely, work at heights and in confined areas with limited visibility. Must be clean shaven for respirator fit (modest moustache is fine). Firewatch Essential Job Tasks 1. Assists in setting up equipment, including helping the welder running leads, hoses, operation of air an electric power tools; moves metal pieces for re-fitting; removes scrap from work area. 2. Moves fire bottle to areas of work; observes for sparks from welding and grinding; extinguishes fire when necessary. 3. Maintains a clean, hazard-free work area. 4. Sorts, inspects and stacks lumber and metal scaffold components. Firewatch Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids Fire retardant material, hoses, leads, cleaning equipment and supplies, lights, fire bottle. Metal, wood, scaffold sub-section, bolts, clips, hand tools, cable lines and rope lines. Firewatch Physical/Mental Involvement Lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; standing, walking, climbing/balancing, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crawling, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing and speaking. Understanding written and verbal directions, recognizing and avoiding potential safety hazards, following established procedures. Firewatch Marginal Job Tasks None identified. Firewatch Environmental Factors Works 50% of the time inside, 50% outside, on board ship, drydock, balanced on scaffolding in shipyard.
