Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented Production Material Planner to support production control and scheduling functions at our Portland, TN facility. This role is responsible for ordering and expediting components, steel, and outside processing services to ensure uninterrupted production flow. The ideal candidate has a background in scheduling, purchasing, or materials/inventory control within a manufacturing environment, and thrives on staying ahead of potential supply issues before they impact the production line. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Order components, raw steel, and other production materials in alignment with the production schedule and inventory requirements. Coordinate and manage outside processing shipments, including tracking parts sent to and returned from outside processors. Proactively follow up with suppliers and vendors to confirm order status, resolve delays, and minimize the risk of production downtime. Monitor inventory levels of raw materials and components to ensure adequate supply without overstocking. Partner closely with the Production Control Scheduler to align material availability with the master production schedule. Expedite late or at-risk shipments and communicate potential disruptions to production and management in a timely manner. Maintain accurate purchase order records, delivery dates, and supplier communication logs within the ERP/MRP system. Identify recurring supply issues and recommend process improvements to reduce downtime risk. Collaborate with quality and receiving teams to resolve discrepancies in incoming shipments (short shipments, damaged goods, incorrect parts). Build and maintain strong working relationships with key suppliers and outside processors. Support new part launches by coordinating initial material and tooling procurement timelines. Other duties as assigned to support production continuity
Experience Education:
High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, or related field preferred.
Experience:
2+ years of experience in materials planning, purchasing, scheduling, or inventory control, preferably in an automotive or metal stamping manufacturing environment. Working knowledge of steel/raw material procurement and outside processing coordination is a strong plus. Experience with ERP/MRP systems (e.g., ERP scheduling and purchasing modules). Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple open orders and priorities simultaneously. Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to follow up persistently and professionally with suppliers. Ability to work cross-functionally with production, quality, and scheduling teams. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Outlook. Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, ownership-driven mindset. Work Environment This position operates in both an office setting and a manufacturing plant environment, requiring time on the production floor. Standard safety practices apply when on the shop floor. Physical Demands Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, use a computer for extended periods, and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
