Job Description

Company Overview The Bethlehem Center is a dedicated nonprofit organization with a rich history spanning over 95 years, committed to serving children and families in the Alton Park and South Chattanooga communities through faith-based initiatives, education, character building, and leadership development. Position Purpose The Executive Director is the chief executive of The Bethlehem Center and is accountable to the Board of Directors for the organization's mission impact, financial health, and operational sustainability. The Executive Director sets strategic direction, builds and leads the senior leadership team, cultivates the relationships and resources that sustain the organization, and ensures programs are delivered with quality, compliance, and measurable outcomes. Because case management and family-support services are central to the organization's work, the Executive Director must understand case management practice and human-services delivery well enough to hold program leadership accountable, while day-to-day case management remains the responsibility of qualified program staff. Key Responsibilities 1. Board Governance & Executive Leadership Serve as the primary executive liaison to the Board of Directors, working with the Board Chair to strengthen governance practices and prepare for meetings. Provide the Board with timely, accurate information on finances, programs, compliance, personnel, and strategic opportunities, and keep it informed of significant risks. Implement Board-approved policy and strategic priorities while maintaining a clear line between Board governance and day-to-day management. Lead the organization through change, growth, financial challenges, or transition. 2. Strategic Direction Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of the strategic plan, using program outcomes, financial data, and community need to guide decisions. Identify opportunities for program growth, restructuring, partnership, or new services, and evaluate existing programs for mission fit and sustainability. 3. Financial Stewardship Collaboratively own the organization's overall financial health together with the
Board of Directors:
lead annual budgeting with finance staff and the Board, and regularly review revenue, expenses, cash flow, and budget-to-actual performance. Maintain strong internal financial controls and ensure compliance related to grants, contracts, and restricted funds. Identify financial risk early and take corrective action; work closely with accounting staff, auditors, and the Finance Committee. Pursue revenue diversification so the organization is not overly dependent on any single funding source. 4. Fundraising & External Relations Set annual fundraising goals and priorities with development staff, and participate directly in major donor cultivation and institutional relationships. Cultivate relationships with foundations, corporations, churches, government funders, and community partners; identify new funding and partnership opportunities. Serve as a primary public representative of The Bethlehem Center in Chattanooga and, where appropriate, regionally. 5. Program Oversight Hold program directors accountable for program quality, outcomes, staffing, documentation, and financial stewardship within their departments. Ensure programs stay aligned with mission, funder requirements, and community need, and encourage a family-centered, two-generational approach where appropriate. 6. Compliance & Risk Management Maintain executive oversight of major grants, government-funded programs, and restricted funding, ensuring systems exist for compliance, reporting, and quality assurance. Review and approve significant contracts and organizational commitments within delegated authority. Ensure the organization is prepared for audits, monitoring visits, and funder evaluations, and that corrective action is taken when risks are identified. 7. Staff Leadership & Culture Directly supervise and evaluate the senior leadership team (see Direct Reports above); ensure directors manage their own departments' staff, budgets, and outcomes. Partner with Human Resources on staffing structure, compensation, hiring, and performance management. Build a culture of transparency, accountability, stewardship, professionalism and continuous improvement, and support leadership development and succession planning. 8. Spiritual Leadership Represent the organization's faith identity to churches and donors Mentor senior leaders in faith-informed leadership, shaping how spiritual growth shows up in programs Conduct staff devotions/prayer Communicate the mission clearly to staff, Board, donors, and the community, and protect the organization's reputation and credibility. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field (e.g., human services, nonprofit or organizational leadership, business/public administration, theology or a closely related discipline). Minimum five years of progressively responsible senior or executive leadership experience, including direct accountability for budget and staff. Working knowledge of case management and human-services delivery sufficient to evaluate program quality and hold program leadership accountable, including familiarity with intake, assessment, service planning, documentation, and outcomes. Understand family systems, trauma-informed practice, strengths-based services, cultural responsiveness, and community-based intervention. Understand how case management intersects with housing, food access, education, health care, mental health services, transportation, employment, immigration-related services, public benefits, and other community resources. Demonstrated experience with organizational budgeting and financial stewardship. Demonstrated experience with grants, contracts, or restricted/government funding compliance. Demonstrated experience in fundraising, donor relations, or partnership/community-relationship development. Experience supervising senior leaders or managers. Working knowledge of nonprofit governance and the Executive Director-Board relationship. A committed, practicing Christian, active in a local church, who can speak to their personal faith journey and demonstrate a track record of leading from that faith in a professional or ministry setting. Must be able to lead staff devotions, represent The Bethlehem Center's Christian mission to churches, donors, and community partners, and integrate Christian principles into organizational strategy and decision-making. Strong written, verbal, and public-speaking skills. Preferred Master's degree, or higher, in a related field. Ten or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience. Experience overseeing federally funded or highly regulated programs. Experience leading a nonprofit through financial or organizational stabilization. Experience in a faith-based nonprofit environment. Knowledge of trauma-informed, strengths-based, and family-centered service approaches. Working Conditions Primarily office-based at The Bethlehem Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with regular local travel for donor, funder, and community meetings.
