The Role We're hiring a Mobile UGV Data Collection Operator to take our unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) programs on the road. Diverse terrain is what makes our datasets valuable, and this role exists to go get it — hauling a platform to new sites across the country, standing up a collection campaign on unfamiliar ground, and bringing back high-quality data. This is a 75% travel position . You'll spend your weeks on the road, staying in hotels and Airbnbs near each site and moving between offsite locations on multi-day and multi-week campaigns.

You are the operation on-site:

you tow the platform in, scout and select the routes and trails you'll run, own safety from arrival to breakdown, execute the collection, and keep the vehicle mission-ready the whole time. Because you'll frequently be operating alone and away from base, this role demands more independent judgment than a standard field role. We're looking for a self-starter who can be trusted to make the right call on terrain, safety, and vehicle condition without someone standing over their shoulder. This is a role with a fast-moving defense tech start-up, and the responsibilities and scope are subject to change based on the needs of the company. Responsibilities Transport UGV platforms and support equipment to offsite locations nationwide in a company-provided truck — trailering long distances over highway and rugged approach roads, and managing load, tie-down, and transport safety end to end Conduct site recon and select routes and trails for data collection, assessing terrain, access, land-use restrictions, and hazards before running the platform Own field safety for the collection site: establish and enforce safety protocols, manage risk on unfamiliar terrain, and make the go/no-go calls Operate UGVs during mock missions and data collection across diverse environments Perform pre- and post-mission inspections, routine maintenance, field repairs, and troubleshooting to keep the platform mission-ready away from base Handle all field logistics with minimal support: vehicle loading/unloading, fueling, setup, and breakdown Identify mechanical, electrical, or software issues and report or escalate them promptly to engineering and operations Share observations with engineering and operations teams to improve data quality and vehicle performance Handle and offload data to SSDs and ship back to HQ weekly Coordinate travel, lodging, and campaign scheduling in support of collection objectives Qualifications Willing and able to travel 75% of the time, staying in hotels and Airbnbs for extended multi-week campaigns Extensive experience operating off-road vehicles, ATVs, UTVs, or heavy equipment in rugged, unimproved terrain Proven towing and trailering experience over long distances, including backing, loading, and securing heavy equipment Strong terrain-reading and route-selection judgment — able to assess ground, hazards, and access independently and choose safe, productive trails Exceptional situational awareness and a demonstrated commitment to safe field operations with little to no direct supervision Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and perform field repairs without shop support Clear, reliable communicator, especially when operating remotely and reporting back to base Physically active and comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in varied conditions Ability to lift 45 lbs and handle physical field tasks solo Willingness to work assigned shifts, including weekends and irregular hours dictated by travel and site access Must be a U.S. Person due to access requirements for export-controlled technology Preferred Valid driver's license with a clean record; CDL or trailer endorsements a plus Experience planning or leading independent field operations Familiarity with public-land access, permitting, or land-use coordination Why Join Scout Work on the world's most important frontier, ensuring U.S. and allied dominance in the age of intelligent machines Be a core part of a team building the first defense-specific robotic foundation model Collaborate with some of the top engineers in autonomy, AI, and national security See your work deployed on real systems Growth opportunities within a high-growth industry sector
