Job Description
Position Summary Hearst Ranch Winery is seeking an experienced and hospitality-driven San Simeon Tasting Room Manager to lead our guest experience and daily tasting room operations in San Simeon, California. The Tasting Room Manager is a key leader within our Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) team and plays a critical role in delivering exceptional guest experiences, driving tasting room revenue, growing wine club membership, and developing a high-performing hospitality team. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives on the floor, enjoys connecting with guests, and believes the best hospitality is created by leading through example. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable coaching a team, hosting VIP guests, analyzing sales performance, and ensuring every detail of the tasting room reflects the Hearst Ranch Winery brand. Key ResponsibilitiesTeam Leadership & Development Lead, coach, and develop tasting room associates to deliver exceptional hospitality and achieve sales goals. Recruit, onboard, train, and support tasting room team members across daily operations, events, and peak periods. Build a culture centered on professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and genuine hospitality. Conduct team meetings, performance check-ins, and ongoing coaching to support employee growth. Develop and mentor Shift Leads, ensuring strong floor leadership and operational consistency. Maintain adherence to company policies, service standards, and responsible beverage service requirements. Guest Experience & Direct-to-Consumer Sales Create memorable, personalized guest experiences that reflect the Hearst Ranch Winery brand. Lead tastings, engage with guests, and actively participate on the sales floor. Drive tasting room revenue through effective selling techniques, relationship building, and exceptional service. Support wine club growth through authentic guest engagement and education. Build lasting relationships with wine club members, repeat guests, VIP customers, and local partners. Confidently handle guest concerns and service recovery situations with professionalism and care. Tasting Room Operations Oversee daily tasting room operations, ensuring a polished, welcoming, and organized environment. Maintain high standards for cleanliness, presentation, hospitality, and overall guest experience. Ensure compliance with California ABC regulations and responsible alcohol service practices. Oversee POS accuracy, customer data capture, cash handling procedures, and daily operational reporting. Create and maintain staffing schedules that support business needs, events, holidays, and seasonal demand. Train team members on opening, closing, emergency procedures, and operational best practices. Inventory & Reporting Conduct regular inventory counts and partner with operations teams to resolve discrepancies. Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly sales performance, guest counts, and conversion metrics. Track wine club conversion trends and provide recommendations to improve results. Provide sales insights and operational recommendations to the DTC leadership team. Community Outreach & Brand Representation Represent Hearst Ranch Winery as a visible ambassador within the local hospitality community. Develop relationships with area hotels, concierges, transportation companies, chambers of commerce, tourism partners, and wine retailers. Participate in local events and outreach opportunities that increase brand awareness and guest visitation. Collaborate with marketing efforts to support brand initiatives and customer engagement. QualificationsRequired Qualifications Minimum 3 years of experience in wine hospitality, tasting room management, or luxury hospitality leadership. Proven ability to lead, coach, and motivate a guest-facing team. Strong knowledge of wine, wine service, and California wine regions. Experience driving direct-to-consumer sales and wine club growth. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and occasional special events. ABC Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) certification, or ability to obtain prior to working independently on the floor. Preferred Qualifications Formal wine education (WSET, Court of Master Sommeliers, or equivalent). Experience with wine club programs and DTC sales strategy. Experience with POS systems such as Corksy or similar platforms. Familiarity with reservation systems such as Tock or similar tools. Experience with inventory management and sales reporting. Work Environment This position is primarily based at our San Simeon tasting room and requires a strong presence on the tasting room floor. The role involves regular interaction with guests, standing for extended periods, walking, and working in both indoor and outdoor hospitality environments. The Tasting Room Manager is expected to be actively engaged with guests and team members while also managing administrative responsibilities including scheduling, reporting, and operational planning. This is a full-time salaried exempt position with flexibility required during high-volume periods including holidays, special events, and wine club release periods.
