Job Description
Position Summary The Shop Supervisor at Carteret Marine oversees the daily operations of our maintenance and fabrication shop, ensuring all vessels, vehicles, equipment, and shop assets are maintained to the highest operational standards. This role leads shop personnel, coordinates repairs, performs welding/fabrication, and manages inventory to support marine operations and field crews. The Shop Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a safe, efficient, and well-organized work environment that keeps Carteret Marine equipment ready for deployment. Key Responsibilities Shop Operations & Leadership Supervise, schedule, and support shop technicians, mechanics, and welders. Assign and monitor daily tasks to ensure timely, high-quality work. Train team members in equipment use, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment in accordance with Carteret Marine standards. Marine, Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance Oversee and perform preventive maintenance and repairs on boats, trailers, marine engines, heavy equipment, and fleet vehicles. Troubleshoot mechanical issues and coordinate specialized repairs with outside vendors when necessary. Maintain accurate maintenance logs, service records, and compliance documentation for marine safety requirements. Ensure all shop and field equipment is operational, reliable, and ready to meet project schedules. Welding & Fabrication Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication for vessel repairs, equipment modification, or custom builds. Inspect weld quality and ensure all work meets structural, marine, and safety standards. Inventory Management & Procurement Manage shop inventory, including parts, tools, welding consumables, fluids, and safety supplies. Track inventory levels, conduct audits, and ensure accurate documentation. Coordinate purchasing, manage vendor relationships, and maintain cost-effective stock levels. Administrative & Reporting Duties Prepare maintenance schedules, inventory reports, and shop activity logs. Assist with budgeting for tools, equipment, and maintenance planning. Ensure compliance with Carteret Marine policies, OSHA regulations, and marine industry safety requirements. Qualifications Required Proven experience as a Shop Supervisor, Lead Mechanic, or similar role. Strong mechanical experience in machine, vehicle, and marine equipment maintenance . Proficiency in welding and fabrication (MIG/TIG/Stick preferred). Experience with inventory tracking and shop organization systems . Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and fabrication drawings. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Dedication to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment. Preferred Welding certifications (AWS or similar). Marine mechanic experience or certifications. Familiarity with marine safety regulations and standards. Forklift operation certification. Working Conditions Shop and yard environment with exposure to machinery, welding operations, vessels, and moving equipment. Requires use of PPE and adherence to all Carteret Marine safety practices. Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs, stand for extended periods, and operate equipment.
