The Fluvanna SPCA is seeking an energetic, compassionate, collaborative Shelter Operations Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of our shelter and help us continue building a modern, foster-centric organization. We are a small community shelter with an active and engaged Board of Directors. We believe excellent sheltering means providing outstanding care while also working every day to move animals toward positive outcomes through foster, adoption, transfer, and other appropriate pathways. The Position The Shelter Operations Manager is the senior on-site operational leader and works closely with staff, the Board, fosters, volunteers, veterinary partners, and the community. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who enjoys developing people, solving problems, improving systems, and making a meaningful difference for animals. Key Responsibilities Lead and coordinate daily shelter operations. Supervise, coach, support, and hold staff accountable. Build a positive workplace culture centered on teamwork, communication, professionalism, and respect. Ensure high standards of animal care, safety, enrichment, and humane handling. Oversee animal flow from intake through foster, adoption, transfer, or other outcomes. Lead daily population/pathway planning and identify barriers delaying placement. Monitor and work to reduce unnecessary length of stay. Champion foster care as a core sheltering strategy and ensure foster families receive excellent communication and support. Support welcoming, conversation-based adoption practices. Ensure adopters, fosters, volunteers, rescue partners, Animal Control Officers, and community members are treated with respect and compassion. Use shelter data to evaluate outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement. Ensure accurate and timely documentation in Shelterluv. Work collaboratively and transparently with the Board and Executive Committee. Implement organizational policies and strategic priorities while bringing professional expertise, ideas, and recommendations to leadership. Can respectfully disagree while remaining collaborative and implementing organizational decisions. Qualifications Previous management or supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Three years experience in an animal shelter (strongly preferred), and a minimum of one year supervisory experience. Knowledge of animal welfare issues, including pertinent legislation and standards, and commitment to the no-kill philosophy of the Fluvanna SPCA.
