Job Description

Position Summary The Associate Program Director - Sports is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of high-quality youth and adult sports programs at the Kearney Family YMCA. This position focuses on creating a positive, inclusive, and skill-building environment while growing participation, supervising staff, and strengthening community connections through sports programming.

Above all else, we are on a relentless quest to make our community stronger—beginning with you. The Kearney Family YMCA strictly follows a zero tolerance policy regarding child abuse. Key Responsibilities Sports Program Development & Management Plan, organize, and oversee youth and adult sports programs, including leagues, clinics, camps, and special events (e.g., basketball, flag football, soccer, volleyball). Ensure programs are developmentally appropriate, engaging, and aligned with YMCA philosophies and standards. Evaluate program effectiveness and implement improvements based on participation and feedback. Develop seasonal program schedules and curriculum. League Operations & Game Management Coordinate all aspects of league play including registration, team formation, scheduling, and game-day operations. Oversee officials, coaches, and volunteers to ensure a positive and safe experience. Manage gym/field usage and ensure proper setup and breakdown for games and practices. Address participant and parent concerns in a timely and professional manner. Staff Leadership & Development Recruit, hire, train, and supervise coaches, officials, and program staff. Provide ongoing training in YMCA philosophy, youth development, and sport-specific skills. Conduct staff meetings, evaluations, and ensure accountability to program standards. Build a strong, mission-driven team culture. Community Engagement & Partnerships Build relationships with local schools, coaches, and community organizations to grow participation. Represent the YMCA at community events and outreach opportunities. Collaborate with other YMCA departments to support overall member engagement. Member & Participant Experience Ensure a welcoming, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants and families. Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and character development. Respond to feedback and continuously improve program quality and experience. Marketing & Program Growth Assist in the promotion of sports programs through marketing channels and community outreach. Develop strategies to increase participation and retention across all sports offerings. Track and report participation numbers and program trends. Budget & Administration Assist in developing and managing program budgets. Monitor revenue and expenses for sports programs to meet financial goals. Maintain accurate program records, reports, and registration data. Facilities & Equipment Oversee proper use and maintenance of sports equipment and facilities. Manage inventory and ensure equipment is safe, clean, and well-maintained. Coordinate equipment needs for practices, games, and events. Compliance & Risk Management Ensure compliance with YMCA policies, state and local regulations, and child abuse prevention standards. Maintain required certifications and enforce risk management procedures. Ensure proper supervision and safe play environments at all times. Philanthropy & YMCA Mission Support and participate in the YMCA's Annual Campaign and fundraising efforts. Model and promote the YMCA's core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Contribute to the YMCA's mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Education, or related field (or equivalent experience). 1-3 years of experience in sports programming, coaching, or youth development. Experience supervising staff or volunteers preferred. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Passion for youth development and sports. Certifications (or ability to obtain) CPR/AED and First Aid Child Abuse Prevention Training YMCA-specific certifications as required YMCA Team Leader Certification Physical Requirements Ability to actively lead sports activities (running, standing, demonstrating skills). Ability to lift and move sports equipment. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for games and events.
