Job Description - September 2026 POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director provides leadership, management, and oversight for the Carlsbad Literacy Program, ensuring the successful development, implementation, evaluation, and sustainability of programs that support the organization's literacy mission. The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, participants, community partners, and donors to advance literacy opportunities throughout the community.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct and manage the Program's literacy services, including Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), High School Equivalency (HSE/GED), Basic Math, and U.S. Citizenship Preparation. Develop and implement new literacy programs in response to community needs. Prepare and submit grant applications and reports; lead fundraising efforts and cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, and funding organizations. Administer programs in accordance with approved budgets, grant requirements, and established timelines. Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, implementing improvements to enhance outcomes and service quality. Serve as the primary representative of the Program within the community, building partnerships and promoting awareness of literacy needs and Program services. Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors on strategic planning, program development, fundraising, communications, and organizational operations. Attend Board and program meetings and provide regular reports on Program activities and performance. Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate or bachelors degree required; advanced degree preferred. Experience in literacy education, adult education, nonprofit management, or a related field. Demonstrated success in program administration, project management, grant writing, fundraising, and community engagement. Strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in computer applications, social media, and electronic communications. Bilingual preferred but not required. Ability to build effective relationships with diverse stakeholders. Ability to travel within New Mexico and work occasional evenings and weekends. Strong commitment to literacy, lifelong learning, and the mission of the Carlsbad Literacy Program.

SUPERIVISION

The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors, which reserves the right to modify or expand the duties of the position as organizational needs evolve.
