Position Summary Ramapo for Children is seeking motivated, service-oriented emerging professionals to join our team as Retreats Facilitators & Year-Round Program Staff. This is an immersive, residential position based on our 240-acre Rhinebeck, New York campus. Retreats Facilitators & Year-Round Program Staff work primarily within Ramapo's adventure-based Retreats program, supporting groups of young people, educators, and other participants through experiential activities designed to strengthen social-emotional skills, teamwork, communication, leadership, and relationship building. Staff facilitate a variety of outdoor and adventure-based experiences, including icebreakers, team-building activities, ropes and challenge course activities, campfires, and leadership development exercises. Staff also play an important role across Ramapo's other programs. During Ramapo's summer season in June, July, and August, staff transition into counselor or other appropriate program roles within Camp Ramapo, our residential summer camp serving children and young adults with social, emotional, developmental, or learning challenges. This summer assignment is a required component of the position. This is a residential position. As a condition of the position, staff are required to reside in Ramapo-provided housing on the Rhinebeck campus. Housing assignments may be shared and may change based on program and operational needs. During the Residential Camp season, staff may be assigned to live in camper bunks or other communal housing with campers and/or staff. Housing is provided in connection with employment and is subject to Ramapo's residential housing policies. Essential Responsibilities Facilitate adventure-based and experiential learning activities for groups of youth, educators, and other participants. Lead icebreakers, team-building activities, leadership exercises, campfires, and other structured group experiences. Facilitate low and high ropes course activities and other outdoor adventure programming after successfully completing required training. Create welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environments that encourage participation, communication, relationship building, and teamwork. Adapt activities and facilitation approaches based on participants' ages, abilities, developmental needs, and program goals. Guide participants through reflection and help them connect experiential activities to broader social-emotional, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Prepare program spaces, equipment, and materials before activities and assist with breakdown and proper storage afterward. Follow all established program and safety procedures and immediately communicate safety concerns to appropriate supervisors. Participate fully in intensive initial and ongoing training in the Ramapo Approach, youth development, behavior support, experiential education, facilitation, and safety practices. Apply Ramapo's tools and strategies to create environments that foster success for young people with a wide range of needs and abilities. Build positive and supportive relationships with participants while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Serve as a positive role model, coach, and mentor through daily interactions with participants and members of the Ramapo community. Model effective communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving, teamwork, and relationship-building skills. Respond constructively to challenging behaviors using strategies consistent with the Ramapo Approach and established safety protocols. Participate actively in ongoing coaching, supervision, reflection, staff development, workshops, and professional development. During portions of June, July, and August, Retreats Facilitators & Year-Round Program Staff are assigned to work within Ramapo for Children's Residential Camp Program. Summer responsibilities are an essential component of this position. Staff generally work six days per week and receive one scheduled day off each week. Staff may also have scheduled evening time off. Work schedules, including nighttime and overnight responsibilities, vary based on program and camper needs. All hours worked must be accurately recorded in accordance with Ramapo's timekeeping policies. During the Residential Camp season, Staff are expected to: Serve as a counselor or in another assigned residential camp program role. Live in communal summer camp housing with other staff and/or campers. Provide direct supervision, support, and care to campers throughout the residential camp day. Build supportive relationships with campers and create a safe, caring, healthy, and inclusive camp community. Work with children and young adults who may at times demonstrate behaviors that present safety concerns, including physical aggression, and follow Ramapo's established behavior-support, de-escalation, and safety protocols. Participate in required pre-summer and ongoing summer training and supervision related to camper support and safety. Participate in scheduled pool and waterfront activities. Staff who are able to swim are expected to participate in swimming activities in both the pool and lake as assigned and in accordance with established waterfront safety procedures. Participate in nighttime and overnight supervision duties on a rotational basis. Participate in scheduled overnight camping activities, including accompanying campers and sleeping outdoors when required. Understand that program assignments, responsibilities, bunk assignments, and housing locations may change during the summer based on camper needs, staffing requirements, safety considerations, and the operational needs of Camp Ramapo. Support other Ramapo programs, events, and campus initiatives based on organizational and seasonal needs. Assist with participant arrivals and departures, program preparation, special events, and other campus activities. Help prepare, organize, and maintain Ramapo's program spaces, buildings, equipment, and grounds. Maintain program materials and equipment in safe and appropriate condition. Collaborate with staff across departments to provide a safe, supportive, and well-coordinated participant experience. Participate as an active and responsible member of Ramapo's residential community. Follow all policies and expectations contained in Ramapo's Employee Handbook, Rhinebeck Campus Handbook, and other applicable organizational policies. Perform other duties reasonably related to the position and Ramapo's programmatic and operational needs. Supervisory Responsibilities This position does not typically have formal staff supervisory responsibilities. Staff are, however, responsible for providing leadership, supervision, guidance, and appropriate role modeling to youth and other program participants during assigned activities and programs. Staff may also provide informal guidance or support to peers, seasonal staff, interns, or volunteers as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated interest in youth development, education, social-emotional learning, outdoor education, community service, social services, or related work. Ability and willingness to live and work in a residential community. Willingness to transition into a residential summer camp role during June, July, and August. Ability to work a flexible and nontraditional schedule that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, nighttime responsibilities, and overnight assignments. Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and participate actively in adventure-based and camp programming. Ability to work effectively with children and young adults with a wide range of social, emotional, developmental, and learning needs. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and exercise sound judgment when responsible for the safety and well-being of young people. Ability to satisfy all background screening and other pre-employment requirements applicable to the position, in accordance with federal and New York State law. College degree, college coursework, or relevant experience in education, youth development, social work, psychology, outdoor education, recreation, or a related field. Previous experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, schools, camps, outdoor education programs, residential programs, or community-based organizations. Experience with ropes courses, outdoor recreation, experiential education, group facilitation, leadership development, or residential camp programming. Interest in pursuing a career in education, social work, psychology, youth development, nonprofit leadership, outdoor education, recreation, or a related field. Physical & Work Environment This is an active, residential position based on Ramapo's approximately 240-acre Rhinebeck campus. The campus includes woods, fields, streams, hiking trails, waterfront areas, a pool, indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, and extensive high and low ropes challenge courses. The essential functions of this position include regular outdoor and physically active work. Navigating wooded areas, trails, stairs, hills, and uneven terrain. Working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Residential Community Expectations Living on Ramapo's Rhinebeck campus is an integral component of the Staff experience. Staff receive shared housing and meals as part of the position. During the summer Residential Camp season, Staff may live in camper bunks or other communal camp housing and may share living accommodations with campers and/or other staff. All residential staff are expected to contribute to a safe, respectful, inclusive, and supportive community and comply with the policies and expectations established for employees and campus residents. Conditions of Employment Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of all background screening and other pre-employment requirements applicable to the position. Staff must complete required orientation, safety, child protection, and program-specific training and maintain any certifications required for assigned activities. This is a residential position, and continued eligibility to reside in Ramapo-provided housing is connected to continued employment and compliance with applicable residential policies.
