Job Description

Job Overview The Unit Manager is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operation of an assigned Boys & Girls Club unit or school-based program. This position provides direct supervision to Youth Development Professionals and other program staff while ensuring that Club members receive high-quality, safe, and engaging programming. The Unit Manager serves as a positive role model for youth and staff and is responsible for creating an environment that promotes academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character and citizenship, leadership development, and positive social and emotional growth. The ideal candidate is an energetic, dependable, and organized leader who enjoys working with children and can effectively manage both people and program operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Leadership Lead the daily operations of an assigned Club unit or school-based program. Ensure that high-quality programs and activities are provided for Club members each day. Implement programs in areas including education and career development, character and leadership, health and life skills, the arts, and sports and recreation. Develop and maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all members. Monitor program quality and make adjustments based on member needs and participation. Encourage youth participation and create opportunities for members to develop leadership skills. Support homework assistance, academic enrichment, and other school-related activities. Assist with planning special events, field trips, family activities, and Club-wide initiatives. Staff Supervision Supervise, coach, and support Youth Development Professionals and other assigned staff. Provide staff with clear expectations, schedules, responsibilities, and daily direction. Conduct regular staff check-ins and provide constructive feedback. Assist with onboarding and training of new employees. Monitor staff performance and address performance concerns in partnership with the Club Director. Ensure staff maintain appropriate professional boundaries and positive relationships with Club members. Model effective youth-development practices and professional behavior. Youth Safety and Supervision Maintain appropriate supervision of all Club members at all times. Enforce Club policies, procedures, and behavior expectations consistently. Respond appropriately to behavioral issues, conflicts, and emergencies. Follow all child safety, mandated reporting, incident reporting, and emergency procedures. Maintain appropriate staff-to-member ratios and ensure proper attendance and sign-in/sign-out procedures. Immediately report safety concerns or incidents to the appropriate supervisor. Maintain confidentiality regarding members, families, and staff. Family, School, and Community Relationships Build positive relationships with parents, guardians, school personnel, and community partners. Communicate regularly with families regarding programs, activities, schedules, and member needs. Work collaboratively with school personnel when operating a school-based Club program. Represent the Boys & Girls Club in a professional and positive manner. Help identify opportunities to strengthen partnerships and increase Club membership and participation. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain accurate attendance, enrollment, program participation, and other required records. Assist with program reports and documentation. Monitor supplies, equipment, and program materials. Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe program environment. Ensure program areas are prepared before activities and properly secured at the end of each day. Assist the Club Director with staffing, scheduling, purchasing, and other operational needs as assigned.
Qualifications Required:
High school diploma or GED. Previous experience working with children or youth. Previous experience leading or supervising staff preferred. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage groups of children in a positive and structured manner. Ability to work effectively with children, families, staff, schools, and community partners. Ability to pass required background checks and screening. Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within the required timeframe.
Preferred:
Associate or bachelor's degree in education, child development, social work, recreation, youth development, or a related field. Previous Boys & Girls Club, school-based program, childcare, camp, recreation, or youth-program experience. Experience supervising employees. Experience working with elementary and/or middle school-aged youth. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The successful candidate should demonstrate: Strong leadership and team-building skills. Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults. Patience, flexibility, and sound judgment. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with youth. Commitment to the mission and values of the Boys & Girls Club. Ability to work independently while also functioning as part of a team. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to actively engage with children and youth throughout the workday. The employee may be required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, lift, carry, and participate in recreational activities. The employee must be able to safely supervise youth in both indoor and outdoor environments and respond appropriately during emergency situations. Work Schedule The Unit Manager will generally work during after-school program hours, with additional hours as needed for staff meetings, training, special events, school breaks, summer programming, and other Club activities.
Pay:
$45,000.00 - $53,000.00 per year
