Job Description
Powhatan County Internship Program Powhatan County offers internship opportunities for students and individuals interested in gaining practical experience in local government. Internships provide meaningful exposure to public service while allowing participants to apply academic knowledge and develop professional skills in a real-world work environment. Interns may be placed in a variety of departments throughout the County based on organizational needs and the intern's area of interest. Opportunities may include assignments in areas such as administration, parks and recreation, public safety, community development, information technology, and other local government functions. Internships are designed to provide educational and professional development experiences that complement academic coursework, career exploration, or workforce readiness. Internships may be paid or unpaid depending on departmental funding and the nature of the assignment . Unpaid internships are structured to provide a learning-focused experience and may be eligible for academic credit through an educational institution if applicable. Participation in the internship program does not guarantee future employment with Powhatan County. Typical Internship Activities Intern responsibilities may vary by department but may include:
- Observing and learning departmental procedures and operations
- Assisting with research, documentation, or special projects
- Participating in training, meetings, or educational activities
- Supporting departmental initiatives under staff guidance
- Maintaining professionalism and confidentiality in the workplace Intern assignments are intended to provide learning opportunities and do not replace or displace the work of regular employees.
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a high school, college, university, or technical program
- Interest in public service or local government
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively with staff
- Basic computer skills such as email, word processing, or spreadsheets
- Dependable, organized, and willing to learn
