Position Summary The VP of Project Management provides leadership, direction, and oversight for the project management function across the company's self-perform construction operations. This role is responsible for managing, mentoring, and developing a team of 5-8 Project Managers, ensuring consistent, high-quality execution of every project from initial assignment through closeout. The VP will establish and enforce best practices across scheduling, cost control, billing, subcontractor and vendor management, claims, and documentation, serving as the senior escalation point and quality-control authority for the PM team.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Development Manage, coach, and mentor a team of 5-8 Project Managers, providing day-to-day guidance and longterm career development. Design and deliver training programs to ensure every PM is fully proficient in all aspects of project management, including company processes, tools, and standards. Conduct performance reviews, set individual and team goals, and hold PMs accountable to established metrics and deadlines. Onboard new PMs and standardize training materials, checklists, and SOPs across the team. Project Oversight Oversee the assignment of new jobs to PMs, balancing workload, expertise, and project complexity. Review and approve project schedules, ensuring realistic timelines and proactive management of schedule risk. Monitor project correspondence to ensure timely, professional, and accurate communication with owners, GCs, and stakeholders. Oversee billing and pay application processes to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and healthy cash flow across all projects. Review cost projections and forecasts, identifying variances early and directing corrective action. Oversee claims notification, preparation, and submittal, ensuring claims are properly documented, substantiated, and submitted within contractual deadlines. Ensure disciplined subcontractor management, including scope compliance, performance tracking, and issue resolution. Oversee material management and procurement timelines to prevent schedule delays. Maintain strong vendor relations and ensure vendor performance meets project and company standards. Oversee project closeout processes, ensuring complete documentation, final billing, retainage release, and lessons-learned capture. Process & Quality Control Establish standardized processes, templates, and reporting tools for use across the PM team. Conduct regular project reviews/audits to ensure compliance with company standards and contractual requirements. Identify and resolve risks, conflicts, or performance gaps before they impact project outcomes. Report portfolio-level status, risks, and financial performance to senior leadership.
Required Qualifications:
20+ years of Project Management experience, preferably with a self-perform contractor or large GC. Proven experience managing, mentoring, and training a team of Project Managers. Deep working knowledge of the full project lifecycle: job assignment, scheduling, correspondence, billing, cost projections, claims notification/preparation/submittal, subcontractor management, material management, vendor relations, and closeout. Strong leadership and team-development skills, with a track record of building PM capability and consistency across a team. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interface confidently with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and executive leadership. Strong financial acumen, including experience with cost forecasting, billing accuracy, and margin management. Demonstrated experience managing or overseeing construction claims. Ability to work full-time on-site at the home office in Irondale, AL.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience). Experience with project management/ERP software (e.g., Procore or similar). PMP certification or equivalent industry credential.
