Because something might be, and she is the only person who would know what to do about it. We moved across the country to be in the same house — him from Portland, her from Chicago with the kids. It is the first time the four of us have lived under one roof, and at the moment we are running this place like a logistics operation instead of living in it. That is the job. One person to own this household for a year, so that we stop being the only two people who know how it works. The kids, the cooking, the groceries, the rhythms of the house, and coordinating whoever else comes in and out — the cleaner, the sitters, the contractors.
