This position combines household management responsibilities with non-medical companionship and support for an elderly family member living with dementia. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing the needs of a busy household. This person should also be patient, kind, and experienced in working with older adults. The selected candidate will become a trusted extension of our family, helping the home operate smoothly while providing meaningful companionship, structure, and support for our mother-in-law. Household Management Responsibilities Oversee the day-to-day organization and smooth operation of the home. Coordinate household vendors and service providers, including housekeeping, landscaping, HVAC, plumbing, electrical work, and general home repairs. Schedule and supervise maintenance appointments and contractors. Monitor household inventory and purchase necessary supplies. Organize the pantry, closets, storage areas, and shared living spaces. Receive packages and coordinate deliveries, exchanges, and returns. Assist with household errands, including dry cleaning, post office visits, pharmacy pickups, and other routine needs. Help maintain household calendars and coordinate appointments as requested. Assist with preparing the home for guests, family gatherings, or special events. Communicate proactively with the family regarding household needs, maintenance concerns, and completed tasks. Grocery Shopping and Meal Preparation Plan simple, healthy meals based on the family's preferences and dietary needs. Prepare home-cooked meals several times per week. Prepare light breakfasts, lunches, snacks, or reheatable meals for the senior family member as needed. Create grocery lists and complete routine grocery shopping. Keep the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry organized and appropriately stocked. Monitor food freshness and discard expired items. Label and store prepared meals appropriately. Clean and organize the kitchen following meal preparation. Senior Companion Responsibilities Provide compassionate, non-medical companionship and support for an elderly family member living with dementia while promoting safety, dignity, comfort, and independence.
Responsibilities may include:
Provide companionship and meaningful daily interaction. Encourage participation in activities such as walking, puzzles, games, music, reading, conversation, and other appropriate hobbies. Help establish and maintain a consistent daily routine. Prepare meals and snacks and encourage appropriate nutrition and hydration. Provide verbal reminders and gentle cueing for daily activities. Accompany the senior family member on walks, errands, appointments, or recreational outings. Offer calm reassurance and redirect confusion, frustration, or anxiety using dementia-friendly communication techniques. Encourage safe movement and appropriate activity while respecting the individual's independence. Observe changes in mood, behavior, cognition, appetite, or mobility and communicate concerns promptly to the family. Maintain a safe, respectful, calm, and engaging environment. Coordinate with family members and outside caregivers or home-care providers as directed. Scope of the Position This is a non-medical companion and household-management position. It does not include skilled nursing services or medical care. The employee will not be responsible for: Administering medications Making medical decisions Performing medical treatments Providing wound care or injections Conducting clinical assessments Managing medical equipment Providing bathing, toileting, or extensive personal-care assistance Performing heavy lifting or physical transfers Any significant medical, behavioral, or safety concerns should be reported promptly to the family.
Qualifications Preferred qualifications include:
Previous experience working in a private home, concierge service, senior-care setting, hospitality role, or executive-support position. Experience as a house manager, household assistant, personal assistant, family assistant, or senior companion. Experience working with older adults, particularly individuals living with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Understanding of dementia-friendly communication, redirection, and routine-based support. Ability to prepare simple, healthy, home-cooked meals. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Strong communication and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and anticipate household needs. Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation. Ability to pass a background check and provide professional references. CPR and First Aid certification preferred. Paid time off and paid holidays may be offered based on the final schedule and terms of employment.
