P osition
Overview:
The Office of Council Member Jose-Enrique Saldana is seeking highly motivated students interested in public service, Tribal governance, policy development, communications, and community engagement. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in Tribal government while working closely with elected leadership and community stakeholders. Interns will develop a deeper understanding of public policy, constituent services, legislative affairs, and the challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous communities. Competitive candidates possess strong communication and writing skills, demonstrate professionalism and initiative, and are committed to serving communities with respect and integrity. Interns should be adaptable, collaborative, and willing to travel throughout Yoeme communities as part of the Council Member's commitment to equitable representation and outreach.
Pay:
$3,000 semester stipend Key Responsibilities Interns may assist with: Legislative and policy research Drafting memos, briefing materials, correspondence, and public messages Tracking legislation and public policy developments affecting Tribal communities Attending meetings, hearings, briefings, and community events Assisting with constituent services and casework Supporting community outreach initiatives and public engagement efforts Staffing events and assisting with logistical planning Answering telephone inquiries and directing communications Managing correspondence and processing constituent mail Maintaining records and organizational systems Performing other duties as assigned Assist with committee preparation and hearing support Analyze emerging issues impacting Indigenous communities Support community outreach campaigns Develop informational and educational materials Document community meetings and public events What Interns Will Gain Through this internship, participants will: Gain direct exposure to Tribal governance and leadership Learn how legislation and policy impact Indigenous communities Develop professional writing, research, and communication skills Build relationships with Tribal leaders, community stakeholders, and public servants Strengthen leadership and civic engagement experience Contribute to meaningful initiatives that support the Pascua Yaqui people. Preferred Qualifications Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited college, university, or graduate program Strong written and verbal communication skills Demonstrated interest in Tribal governance, public policy, community development, social services, communications, or related fields Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications Strong organizational and time-management skills Ability to handle confidential information professionally Willingness to travel throughout Yoeme communities as needed Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment Desired Areas of Study Applicants pursuing degrees in the following fields are encouraged to apply: Public Administration Political Science Public Policy Sociology Social Work Communications Journalism Native American or Indigenous Studies Law and Legal Studies Education Business Administration Community Development
