THE POSITION
This position will perform a variety of duties within the Public Works Department which include: planning, scheduling, and supervising the work activities of operations staff responsible for construction, maintenance, repair, and/or operation of streets, parks, and storm drains. Additionally, the incumbent supervises the maintenance/operation of the City's wastewater collection system, pumps and lift stations; inspects construction/maintenance of the system to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Primary duties also consist of overseeing snow removal activities; which may include operating a snowplow, and assisting in the City's related responses to emergency incidents. In addition, the successful candidate will monitor the crews' work activities to ensure safe work practices, work quality, and accuracy. Under general direction from the Deputy Director of Public Works, the position will also perform other related and peripheral duties as required or becomes necessary for the successful performance of the Public Works Department. The candidate in this position will be required to work nights , weekends, and holidays, as well as respond to after-hours emergency call-outs and perform routine standby duties.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be able to effectively supervise and direct the operations and activities of a variety of Public Works and Sanitation maintenance units; and estimate time, materials and equipment needed to complete projects. The Public Works Supervisor should prioritize safety, and encourage and ensure coworkers adhere to safe work practices. The successful candidate should have the ability to plan, organize, train, evaluate and direct work of assigned staff. Assignments can be quite varied and unique; therefore, the successful applicant must also be able to exercise sound judgement and exhibit independent problem solving skills with minimal direction. In addition, the candidate will need to establish positive working relationships with community stakeholders, residents and staff.
