08/19/2026 1:51 PM Public Works Director - Full-time - $106,263/Annually (DOQ) Highly responsible position providing direction for all Public Works activities including directing, planning, coordinating implementing and maintaining County infrastructure. This professional position oversees all operating areas including Engineering, Road and Bridge Maintenance, Surveying, Stormwater, and Heavy Equipment Maintenance. Position may include other Divisions (i.e., Fleet Maintenance, Cemetery, Solid Waste, etc.). Work is performed with considerable independent judgment under the direction of the Deputy County Administrator.
Responsibilities:
Directs the daily management of the Public Works Department operations. Develops criteria for inspection, evaluation and implementation of effective operational programs and procedures; ensures adherence to program guidelines and timetables. Provide long-range planning and policy development (i.e., cost analysis, program development, implementation and monitoring) to ensure proper maintenance and repair of related facilities. Coordinate with other related County Departments, Federal, State and City Agencies. Prepare and manages annual operating and CIP budgets for the Public Works Department. Reviews division budgets, provides advice and/or assistance and authorize changes as appropriate. Oversees all design/engineering and construction plans for conformance with County, Federal, State and City Agency's regulations and standards. Conduct and attend various meetings and professional conferences. Develops and maintains constructive and productive working relationships with County staff, County, Federal, State and City agencies, consulting engineers, construction project engineers, professional and technical groups and the general public. Develop maintenance manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and policies, as required. Cultivate a culture of customer service throughout the Department. Promote staff development and succession planning. Performs other tasks as required. (These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Mnimum Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of modern techniques, methods, procedures, principles and practices of all phases of Public Works, Engineering, Stormwater, Facilities Maintenance and Heavy Equipment Maintenance. Thorough knowledge of the use and care/maintenance of all types of public works and engineering tools, equipment, instruments, materials and supplies. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of finance and business administration preferably in the public sector. Ability to plan, direct, supervise, coordinate, organize and inspect Public Works and engineering plans, projects, programs and activities. Ability to address elected officials, civic organizations and other public and/or private groups on Public Works related topics and/or projects issues. Ability to develop, prepare and present long-range plans and programs relating to all areas of responsibility.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree with major course work in Public Administration, Business Administration, Construction Management, Engineering or a closely related field (must submit with application). Five (5) years of supervisory experience in any combination of the following areas, engineering, road and bridge maintenance and construction, surveying, stormwater, and heavy equipment maintenance. Comprehensive technical experience in public works and/or engineering or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. (A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
Valid Florida Driver's License Prefer membership with Florida's and/or National Public Work's related professional organizations.
