Job Summary:
The purpose of this position is to facilitate the distribution of information regarding city operations, initiatives, events and other news to the residents, elected officials and visitors of Cambridge, Md. This job works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings. ________________________________________________________________________________
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Plans, develops and directs programs and activities to ensure dissemination of information designed to keep City departments and the community informed of City programs, services, activities, features, accomplishments or positions. Produces communication materials about City services by gathering information, writing, editing and preparing layout for distribution to internal and external audiences. Represents the City to the community at-large through the development and maintenance of relationships with key community groups, external agencies, and/or other interested parties. Performs short- and long-term planning aimed at increasing marketing and community relations outreach on a local and regional level; develops communication and marketing plans as well as short- and long-term goals. Coordinates regular citizen education programs designed to educate and engage citizens in City government. Develops and recommends new communications and marketing methods and enhancements to better achieve City goals and marketing City services to residents, community groups, economic development entities, and other external organizations. Answers inquiries from media representatives and/or the general public by providing information based on detailed knowledge of City programs and activities and as required by state open records laws; may refer inquiries to the proper City officials. Reviews editorial writing, speech writing, press releases, marketing efforts, special events and special projects. Coordinates media conferences, as requested. Plans and participates in meetings with City officials, general public, community groups, religious organizations and schools to share information and discuss City activities. Manages and advises communication during emergency and crisis events. Performs related work as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related discipline. Ten years of public relations, planning, preparing, and disseminating information to the public through the news media such as positions with the press or television involving news writing, reporting, feature writing, or editing. or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license to be in good standing and acceptable by the City of Cambridge's insurance company.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT
All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD
All City of Cambridge employees are subject to a one (1) year probationary period provision as specified in the employee handbook. Probationary, temporary, provisional, and seasonal employees serve at the pleasure of the City and are "At-Will."
