Job Description

The Communications Director is responsible for hands-on development and management of all mediums of communication with the community, including, but not limited to, traditional and digital communications, marketing, public affairs, media relations, and multi-media productions. This position is also responsible for overall City branding and publications, disseminating appropriate information to residents, and advancing a positive image of the City. Duties are performed under the general direction of the City Manager and/or designee. This position requires extensive knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite applications, including Photoshop; office software, including Microsoft Suite applications, as well as other design, layout, and editing software such as Premier Pro, InDesign and similar. Knowledge of social media platforms and basic camera and video equipment usage is desired.
Examples of duties:
Serves as the city's official public information officer with all media outlets and the general public, including emergency and/or critical incidents. Directs, designs, and develops a variety of publications, including quarterly newsletter, surveys, promotional items, and print media to increase awareness of the City's goals with internal and external audiences. Develops and implements public engagement strategies; develops and leads public relations, marketing campaigns, and educational programs to inform and engage the community; manages ongoing relationships with the community, media, and key stakeholders. Monitors news and social media for City-related communications and discussions; relays community feedback and engagement trends to the leadership team. Manages the City's website content consistent with the City's communications strategies; assists staff in developing and maintaining department-level pages. Supervises the responsibilities of the Communications Specialist (part-time), which includes, but is not limited to, the overall broadcast production and programming of Beavercreek Television. Oversees all marketing functions of the City, including communication policy compliance and project management responsibilities of marketing and public relation contractors. Develops new programs and projects to improve the delivery of information and services to the public. May organize and implement in-house and community-wide special events.
Examples of Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of current principles, practices, techniques and objectives of public information and media relations programs, marketing, graphic design, public administration, and project management. Must be articulate and concise in written and oral communications. Must have excellent command of the English language. Ability to design and develop a variety of promotional and informational materials. Advanced knowledge and ability in mass communication using various media, public speaking and written communications. Ability to understand municipal operations to formulate and implement comprehensive communication plans. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, employees, official, other agencies, other jurisdictions and vendors.
Required Training & Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in journalism, communications, English, public relations, public administration, or a related field, supplemented by at least three (3) years of experience in public administration, business management, journalism, mass media communications, or public relations; or any combination of training and experience which provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities.
