Legislative Assistant Office of Wayne County Commissioner Hassan M. Ahmad (D-8th)
Location:
500 Griswold St, Detroit, MI 48226
Position:
Full-Time, 40 Hours per
Week Schedule:
Hybrid remote/in-office, evening/weekend hours required periodically based on community events and meetings. Position Summary Wayne County Commissioner Hassan Ahmad is seeking a highly motivated, organized, and community-minded Legislative Assistant to join his District 8th office. The Legislative Assistant will support the day-to-day operations of the Commissioner's office, assist with constituent services, attend Commission and committee meetings, coordinate community engagement activities, and help maintain strong relationships with residents, community leaders, local officials, and organizational partners. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who is organized, responsive, comfortable working independently, and passionate about public service and local government. Key Responsibilities Constituent Services Answer phone calls, emails, letters, and other correspondence directed to the Commissioner's office. Assist constituents with questions, concerns, and requests when possible and connect residents with the appropriate county department, agency, or resource when necessary. Maintain consistent follow-up with constituents and the proper departments to ensure issues are addressed and resolved. Legislative and Commission Support Attend Wayne County Commission and committee meetings with the Commissioner. Take accurate and detailed notes during meetings and prepare summaries of discussions, decisions, and action items. Monitor our district and county matters to keep the Commissioner's office informed of relevant developments. Assist with the preparation of resolutions, certificates of appreciation, letters, resolutions in memoriam, and other official documents. Assist with research and preparation of information related to county policies, programs, and constituent concerns. Community Engagement Attend city council meetings, community gatherings, civic events, and other events throughout District 8th. Represent the Commissioner's office professionally and build positive relationships with residents and community leaders, elected officials, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders. Monitor community calendars and identify relevant events and opportunities for the Commissioner's participation. Assist in coordinating and executing community events hosted or attended by the Commissioner. Communications and Social Media Prepare engaging and informative social media content for the Commissioner's office. Assist with developing content highlighting community events, constituent services, County Commission activities, accomplishments, and updates. Prepare newsletters, mailers, flyers, informational materials, and other communications distributed to the public. Assist with maintaining a consistent and professional public presence across social media and other communication platforms. Administrative Support Assist with scheduling, correspondence, recordkeeping, filing, and other administrative duties. Help maintain organized office systems and constituent records. Perform other administrative and legislative duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Strong organizational and time-management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Proficiency with social media platforms and content creation. Strong attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Professional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with constituents, community leaders, elected officials, and staff. Willingness to attend evening and occasional weekend meetings and community events. Preferred Bachelor's degree in political science, Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, or a related field. Experience working in government, public service, political campaigns, constituent services, communications, or community engagement. Experience coordinating events and community outreach. Familiarity with Wayne County government, local government processes, and public policy. Experience managing social media for a public official, organization, nonprofit, or government entity. $48,679.87 - $58,625.21 per year
