Job Description
Job Summary The Industrial Production Scheduler is responsible for developing, maintaining, and coordinating production schedules to ensure manufacturing orders are completed safely, efficiently, and on time. This role is responsible for translating customer demand and production requirements into practical shop-floor schedules while balancing machine capacity, labor availability, materials, tooling, production sequences, and established manufacturing lead times. The Production Scheduler works closely with Manufacturing, Operations, Customer Service, Sales, Purchasing, Inventory, Quality, Maintenance, and Shipping to maintain an accurate and achievable production plan. This position monitors daily production activity, identifies constraints and potential delays, and adjusts schedules as conditions change. The role requires a strong understanding of industrial manufacturing processes, production flow, machine capacity, work-in-process (WIP), production priorities, and the relationship between customer requirements and shop-floor execution. The Production Scheduler is also responsible for maintaining accurate scheduling data within the company's ERP/MRP system and supporting initiatives that improve throughput, schedule adherence, capacity utilization, inventory performance, and on-time delivery. Essential Functions Develop and maintain daily, weekly, and short-term production schedules for manufacturing operations based on customer orders, demand requirements, production capacity, lead times, and established manufacturing priorities. Schedule and sequence production orders across machines, work centers, departments, and manufacturing processes while considering routings, setup requirements, run times, machine capabilities, labor availability, and material requirements. Review production orders, routings, due dates, quantities, and required completion dates to establish realistic and achievable production schedules. Coordinate the release and prioritization of work orders to the manufacturing floor based on customer requirements, material availability, capacity, and production priorities. Monitor production progress throughout the day and compare actual performance against the established schedule. Proactively identify potential schedule disruptions caused by equipment downtime, labor shortages, material shortages, quality issues, production inefficiencies, rework, absenteeism, or changes in customer requirements. Adjust production schedules as necessary to minimize downtime, protect customer ship dates, maintain production flow, and maximize available capacity. Work directly with Production Supervisors, Leads, and Operators to understand current production status, constraints, WIP levels, and expected completion times. Maintain visibility of WIP throughout the manufacturing process and identify bottlenecks, aging orders, stalled jobs, and production priorities requiring immediate attention. Coordinate with Purchasing and Inventory to verify material availability and identify shortages that could impact production schedules. Partner with Customer Service and Sales to provide accurate production status, estimated completion dates, lead times, and potential delivery risks. Review upcoming customer demand and production requirements to identify capacity constraints and potential bottlenecks before they impact delivery performance. Balance competing production priorities while considering customer commitments, machine availability, production efficiency, setup requirements, and overall plant capacity. Maintain accurate production dates, quantities, priorities, statuses, and other planning information within the ERP/MRP system. Ensure production schedules reflect current shop-floor conditions and that obsolete or inaccurate scheduling information is corrected promptly. Monitor schedule adherence, on-time production performance, past-due orders, WIP levels, and other relevant production metrics. Identify opportunities to improve production sequencing, machine utilization, throughput, changeover efficiency, scheduling accuracy, and overall manufacturing performance. Participate in daily production meetings, scheduling reviews, capacity planning meetings, and cross-functional operational meetings as required. Support continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, waste reduction, and process improvement initiatives related to production planning and scheduling. Maintain effective communication of schedule changes and production priorities to all affected departments. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Secondary Duties Perform production-related data entry and maintain accurate planning and scheduling records. Assist with inventory cycle counts and investigation of inventory discrepancies that may affect production. Assist with production reporting, backlog reviews, capacity reports, and schedule performance reporting. Support production order reconciliation and follow-up on completed, partially completed, or delayed work orders. Assist with special projects involving production planning, process improvement, ERP/MRP system improvements, or operational efficiency. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate or bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Operations, Supply Chain, Business, Industrial Engineering, or a related field preferred. Previous experience in an industrial manufacturing or production environment strongly required. 2+ years of experience in production scheduling, production planning, manufacturing operations, or a related role required. Working knowledge of industrial manufacturing processes, production routings, work centers, machine capacity, lead times, and WIP management. Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate changing conditions and make timely scheduling decisions. High level of attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to communicate effectively with both shop-floor personnel and office/management personnel. Ability to work independently while maintaining strong cross-functional relationships. Ability to remain flexible and adjust priorities quickly when production conditions change. Technical Skills Experience using an ERP/MRP system for production planning, scheduling, work orders, inventory, or material requirements required. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including sorting, filtering, formulas, data analysis, and basic reporting. Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and other Microsoft Office applications. Ability to interpret production orders, bills of material, routings, work-center information, inventory data, and manufacturing schedules. Ability to analyze production data and use it to identify capacity constraints, scheduling issues, and opportunities for improvement. Ability to quickly learn company-specific products, manufacturing processes, ERP/MRP systems, and production requirements.
