Job Description

Position overview The Shipping Manager leads Kaemark's shipping department as a hands-on working manager: roughly half the time on the floor doing the work, half leading the team, carriers and compliance. This person owns getting every order out the door complete, on time, damage-free and at the right freight cost. They build a capable, safety-minded team, choose and manage carriers across small parcel, LTL, TL and hot shot modes, and run local pickups and deliveries with the company box truck. When the dock is busy, they pick, pack, load and drive a forklift alongside the team. Key responsibilities People leadership and development Hire, onboard and train shipping staff, and keep cross-training current so every critical task has at least two trained people. Set clear daily priorities, coach on the floor, and give regular one-on-one feedback. Write and deliver annual performance reviews, and build development plans for high-potential employees. Handle attendance, discipline and conflict fairly and consistently, in partnership with HR. Build a team culture of accountability, safety and continuous improvement. Pick, pack and ship operations Plan daily and weekly workload against order volume and ship dates, and assign staff to match. Make sure orders are picked accurately, packed to protect product, labeled correctly and staged by carrier and cutoff time. Maintain packaging standards and keep packaging supplies stocked. Keep the dock, staging areas and shipping stations organized using 5S practices. Work hands-on picking, packing, loading, unloading and operating material-handling equipment as volume requires. Transportation and carrier management Schedule outbound and inbound shipments across all modes: small parcel (such as UPS and FedEx), LTL, full truckload (TL) and hot shot/expedited. Pick the best mode and carrier for each shipment based on cost, transit time, service needs and customer requirements. Build and maintain carrier relationships, negotiate rates and accessorials, and review carrier performance on a regular schedule.
Prepare and check shipping documents:
bills of lading, packing lists, labels and hazmat paperwork where it applies. Resolve delays, shortages and damage, and file and track freight claims until they are closed. Audit freight invoices against quotes and contracts, and dispute billing errors. Local fleet and driver management Supervise the company box-truck driver, and plan daily local pickup and delivery routes. Make sure the driver keeps a valid license, current DOT medical card and a clean record, as required.
Keep required vehicle records:
pre- and post-trip inspections, maintenance, and hours-of-service logs if they apply. Schedule truck maintenance and repairs, and keep the truck clean, safe and DOT-compliant. Serve as backup driver for local runs if properly licensed. Safety and compliance Enforce OSHA, DOT and company safety policies in the shipping area and on the road. Run powered industrial truck (forklift) training and certification, and keep the records current. Lead regular safety talks, inspections and audits, and correct hazards quickly. Investigate incidents and near misses, and put corrective actions in place. Make sure hazmat shipments are classified, packaged, labeled and documented correctly, when they apply. Reporting and continuous improvement Track and report department KPIs such as on-time shipping, order accuracy, freight cost and safety. Find and implement improvements to reduce cost, errors and cycle time. Work closely with Sales, Customer Service, Production, Purchasing and Inventory Control on priorities, expedites, customer shipping requirements and stock issues. Help set and manage the shipping department budget, including freight spend. Required qualifications 10+ years of shipping, warehouse or logistics experience, including at least 5 years supervising or managing hourly staff. A track record of developing people: training, coaching, promoting from within, and improving team performance. Hands-on experience scheduling and managing carriers for small parcel, LTL, TL and hot shot/expedited shipments. Working knowledge of freight documents, freight classes (NMFC), accessorial charges and the freight claims process. Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards (including powered industrial trucks) and the
DOT/FMCSA
rules that apply to a company-operated box truck. Experience supervising a company driver, including route planning and vehicle compliance records. Comfort with ERP/WMS systems, carrier shipping software and web portals, and Microsoft Excel. High school diploma or GED. Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Preferred qualifications Experience managing a pick/pack/ship operation in a manufacturing or distribution setting. Associate's or bachelor's degree in supply chain, logistics, business or a related field. Forklift trainer certification, or the ability to become certified to train and evaluate operators. OSHA 10- or 30-hour certification. Experience with a transportation management system (TMS) or multi-carrier shipping platform. Lean, 5S or Six Sigma training or project experience. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus but not required. Prior military service is a plus, especially in logistics, transportation or supply roles.
