Position Overview The Materials Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating materials management activities across the facility, including material planning, inventory control, purchasing, production scheduling, logistics, and distribution. This position will ensure the timely availability of materials to support production requirements while maintaining appropriate inventory levels, supporting customer delivery requirements, and identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs. The Materials Manager will work closely with production, purchasing, logistics, customer service, and leadership teams to optimize material flow and ensure alignment between customer demand, production capacity, inventory, and supply requirements. Key Responsibilities Lead and coordinate materials management activities, including material planning, purchasing, inventory control, production scheduling, shipping, receiving, and distribution. Ensure the timely availability and receipt of raw materials and components required to support production schedules. Develop and maintain achievable production schedules aligned with customer requirements, available capacity, material availability, and operational priorities. Coordinate production, material, and shipping schedules to support on-time customer delivery. Monitor customer demand, capacity requirements, and volume fluctuations and adjust material and production plans accordingly. Partner with cross-functional teams to identify capacity constraints, material risks, and potential supply disruptions and develop appropriate mitigation plans. Plan and allocate personnel and resources to ensure appropriate operational coverage and effective execution of materials activities. Lead physical inventory activities and ensure inventory records accurately reflect material on hand. Monitor inventory levels and establish appropriate controls to minimize excess, obsolete, and shortage inventory. Manage the flow and control of consigned and customer-owned materials, including space utilization, FIFO practices, lot control, and traceability requirements. Develop and maintain inventory strategies that balance customer requirements, production needs, working capital, and operational efficiency. Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams to develop forecasts and establish inventory levels consistent with business requirements and demand. Evaluate purchasing opportunities by considering supplier pricing, payment terms, discounts, freight, duties, tariffs, currency fluctuations, and other applicable costs. Monitor supplier performance and work with suppliers to address material availability, delivery, quality, and capacity issues. Identify opportunities to reduce material, purchasing, inventory, transportation, and labor costs while maintaining service levels and operational performance. Optimize transportation and logistics activities to improve efficiency and control costs. Ensure compliance with applicable customs, import/export, transportation, and supply-chain requirements. Monitor key materials and supply-chain performance indicators and develop corrective actions when targets are not achieved. Prepare and communicate reports related to inventory, production schedules, purchasing, material availability, customer requirements, and operational performance. Promote continuous improvement within materials management processes, systems, and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Degree or diploma in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field; equivalent education and relevant experience may be considered. 5-7 years of progressive experience in materials management, supply chain, purchasing, production planning, or a related function. Previous supervisory or management experience in a manufacturing or operational environment. Experience with material requirements planning (MRP), enterprise resource planning (ERP), and inventory management systems. Working knowledge of customs, import/export, transportation, and supply-chain compliance requirements. Experience supporting high-volume industrial or manufacturing operations and customer-driven production schedules is preferred. Required Skills & Experience Strong understanding of materials planning, inventory management, purchasing, production scheduling, logistics, and distribution processes. Ability to analyze demand, inventory, capacity, and production requirements and develop effective material and production plans. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify supply risks, evaluate alternatives, and implement practical solutions. Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to changing customer and production requirements. Strong understanding of inventory control principles, including FIFO, lot control, traceability, cycle counting, and physical inventory processes. Ability to effectively manage supplier and internal relationships to support material availability and on-time delivery. Strong financial and analytical awareness, with the ability to identify opportunities for cost reduction and improved operational efficiency. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and experience working with ERP/MRP and inventory management systems. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with employees, leadership, suppliers, customers, and cross-functional teams. Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Self-motivated, results-oriented, and accountable with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to develop, coach, and motivate team members.
