Duties Safely operate commercial vehicles such as school buses, transit buses, and paratransit vans in accordance with all traffic laws and transportation safety regulations. Assist passengers with wheelchair boarding and provide wheelchair assistance to ensure accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges. Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including emergency stop procedures and first aid protocols when necessary. Maintain a clean and well-maintained vehicle interior and exterior, performing basic mechanical checks before each shift. Communicate effectively with passengers, colleagues, and dispatchers using clear English or multilingual skills to ensure smooth operations. Enforce student discipline policies when transporting children and manage behavior professionally to promote a safe environment. Respond quickly to traffic changes or unexpected situations by adjusting routes or driving strategies while prioritizing passenger safety. Complete detailed logs of trips, incidents, and vehicle inspections in compliance with state and local commercial driving laws. Skills Proven experience in bus driving, school bus operation, or transit bus driving with a valid CDL license. Strong knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and emergency response procedures for transportation. Excellent communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities. Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting passengers or handling equipment safely. Mechanical knowledge for basic vehicle troubleshooting and maintenance awareness. Demonstrated understanding of child care principles and behavior management techniques for working with children or seniors. Exceptional customer service skills combined with a friendly attitude and professional demeanor. Ability to respond quickly to traffic changes and adapt driving strategies accordingly while maintaining safety standards. Knowledge of school policies related to student discipline and safety protocols during transit operations.
