Job Description
Job Overview We are seeking a dedicated and energetic School Van Driver in the Sparta, Oak Ridge & West Milford area to ensure the safe and reliable transportation of students to and from school and related activities. This vital role involves operating school vans with professionalism, adhering to traffic laws, and providing excellent customer service to students, parents, and school staff. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining a safe environment, managing student behavior, and responding promptly to traffic and emergency situations. This paid position offers an opportunity to contribute positively to students' daily routines while ensuring transportation safety regulations are strictly followed. Responsibilities Safely operate school vans and paratransit vehicles, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations. Assist students with boarding and exiting the vehicle, including providing wheelchair assistance when necessary. Maintain a clean, well-maintained vehicle in accordance with school policy and safety standards. Manage student behavior professionally, applying behavior management techniques to ensure a safe environment during transit. Communicate effectively with school staff, parents, and students regarding schedules, delays, or issues that arise during transportation. Respond quickly to traffic changes or road hazards to ensure timely arrivals and departures. Conduct routine vehicle inspections and report any maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly. Adhere to all state and local commercial driving laws as well as transportation safety regulations for passenger safety. Support the implementation of child care policies by fostering a respectful and disciplined environment onboard. Experience Proven experience in bus driving or commercial driving, preferably with school bus or transit bus operation experience. Knowledge of traffic laws, emergency response procedures for transportation, and vehicle codes relevant to school van operation. Experience working with children or in childcare settings is highly desirable. Valid driver's license appropriate for operating passenger vehicles; commercial driver's license (CDL) with P & S endorsements required. First aid certification including CPR is a plus Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are an advantage for engaging diverse student populations. Familiarity with student discipline policies and behavior management techniques is beneficial.
