A Transportation Supervisor managers internal distribution for a company, or transportation for a company that ships packages to customers. Assigns and directs drivers, coordinates transportation schedules, and monitors trucks or delivery vehicles. May supervise transportation services for a school district, higher education institution, or a recreational or corporate campus. Coordinates routes, assigns drivers, and monitors vehicle operations.
We are seeking an experienced, safety-focused Lead Driver/Dispatcher to join our Transportation Department. This is a working leadership position that requires the successful candidate to lead by example while supporting the daily operations of our transportation team. The Lead Driver/Dispatcher serves as the primary backup to the Transportation Manager and must be capable of stepping into any driving assignment or dispatch function as business needs require. Candidates must possess a valid Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement (Hazmat endorsement preferred or the ability to obtain), a current DOT Medical Certificate, an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record, and a minimum of three (3) years of recent commercial Class A driving experience. Candidates must also have prior experience serving as a Driver Lead, Driver Trainer, Dispatcher, or Transportation Supervisor and possess a strong understanding of FMCSA, DOT, and safety regulations. Responsibilities include assisting with the daily dispatch of drivers, assigning routes, monitoring route progress, coordinating schedule changes, responding to customer service needs, assisting with emergency requests, and helping maximize route efficiency while maintaining excellent customer service. The successful candidate will serve as the primary fill-in driver during vacations, call-outs, increased workload, or other staffing needs and must be willing to operate any company vehicle as assigned. This position plays an important leadership role by coaching, mentoring, and training drivers, reinforcing company policies and procedures, promoting accountability, and maintaining a positive team environment. The Lead Driver/Dispatcher will assist with driver onboarding, conduct ride-alongs and driver evaluations, participate in safety meetings, monitor Hours of Service compliance, review Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs), assist with accident investigations, identify maintenance concerns, and help maintain compliance with all company, DOT, OSHA, and FMCSA regulations. Candidates must be computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, email, and basic computer applications. Experience using routing, GPS, fleet management, or dispatch software such as Samsara or similar platforms is highly preferred. The ability to prepare reports, maintain accurate transportation records, communicate professionally with customers and employees, and effectively manage multiple priorities is essential. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, and possesses excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. They must be capable of working independently, making sound decisions under pressure, and representing the company professionally at all times. This position requires the ability to lift up to 75 pounds, climb tankers and equipment, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and safely perform the physical duties associated with commercial driving and transportation operations.
