03/26/2026 POSITION SUMMARY The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the Zuni Public School District transportation system. This position provides leadership and oversight for all transportation staff, routes, fleet maintenance coordination, and regulatory compliance in accordance with state law, federal guidelines, and Board of Education policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are representative but not exhaustive. Other duties may be assigned. Operations & Planning
  • Design, implement, and continually improve a safe and efficient pupil transportation system aligned with Board of Education policies.
  • Develop and maintain accurate student eligibility lists for transportation services, including special education and at-risk populations.
  • Evaluate and approve bus stop locations with student safety as the primary consideration.
  • Coordinate and approve field trips, extracurricular, and athletic transportation requests.
  • Interpret and apply federal and state transportation regulations; communicate requirements to staff and stakeholders.
  • Recommend improvements to transportation services, driver conduct standards, and operational efficiency. Compliance & Record Keeping
  • Maintain complete and accurate records including student ridership, route mileage, special trip logs, traffic incidents, and all state- and federally-required reports.
  • Conduct periodic review of all bus driver MVR (motor vehicle records) and background clearances to ensure ongoing student safety standards are met.
  • Maintain personnel records and submit timely, accurate payroll documentation.
  • Ensure fleet inspections, preventive maintenance schedules, and vehicle documentation comply with NMDOT and FMCSA requirements. Staff Development & Safety
  • Plan and facilitate school bus driver pre-service and in-service education programs in compliance with state certification requirements.
  • Recruit, interview, and recommend qualified bus drivers, substitute drivers, and transportation aides for employment.
  • Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement throughout the transportation department.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises bus drivers, substitute drivers, and transportation aides. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and district policies. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and onboarding; scheduling, assigning, and directing daily work; conducting performance evaluations; coaching and disciplining employees; and resolving complaints and conflicts in a fair and timely manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree in transportation management, logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in transportation operations, school district transportation, or a closely related field.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred. Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license required.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • New Mexico School Bus Driver Certificate or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
  • Must maintain a clean driving record throughout employment. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of state and federal pupil transportation laws, NMDOT regulations, and FMCSA requirements.
  • Proficient in transportation routing software, student information systems, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to present effectively to district leadership, parents, and community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships with students, families, staff, and the broader school community.
  • Ability to analyze operational data, identify problems, and implement practical solutions.
  • Bilingual (English/Zuni or English/Navajo) preferred but not required.
BACKGROUND CHECK REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must successfully pass a criminal background check through the Zuni tribe (if applicable), the New Mexico Department of Public Safety and the FBI prior to employment. Ongoing background screening is required per state law and district policy. Must be free of any disqualifying criminal history.

    Purpose:
    To provide classroom instruction in the Zuni language to meet the goals and objectives of the Zuni Public School District's State Bilingual Program. This is to be used as a guide for accomplishing state and district objectives and only covers the primary functions and responsibilities of the position. It is in no way to be construed as an all-encompassing list of duties.
    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Associate of Arts or Applied Science Degree; OR
    • An equivalent combination of education experience; AND
    • Must have a NM Education Assistant License Level II (502);
    • Must have a NM Native American Language and Culture Certificate (520);
    • Have knowledge of Zuni culture, traditions, customs and language;
