Job Description
The Warehouse Supervisor, Swing Shift, leads the late-afternoon and night operations of the McDowell Valley Winery warehouse, Monday through Thursday. This role is vital for extending leadership coverage into the evening hours, providing continuous on-site supervision for the warehouse during the night shift . This position is responsible for ensuring that all outbound orders are staged for the next day's shipments and that any late-day inbound receipts are properly received and documented. By actively monitoring both shipping and receiving functions at night, this supervisor guarantees that the warehouse runs smoothly after normal business hours and that the facility is ready for the next morning's operations, including a clean dock, organized inventory, and staged outbound orders. This position works closely with day shift leadership to receive handoff instructions and to report nightly progress, thus minimizing any gaps or delays between shifts. The position reports directly to the Warehouse Manager . All swing shift forklift operators and the swing-shift utility staff will report to this Supervisor. In this leadership role, the position serves as the ranking on-site supervisor during the night shift, and holds full responsibility for safety, productivity, and execution of warehouse processes.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Lead Night Shift Warehouse Operations:
Supervise all warehouse activities from 3:00 PM until 1:30 AM (four 10-hour shifts, Mon-Thu), covering both shipping and receiving functions during the swing shift. Ensure that production, receiving, and shipping tasks continue efficiently via direction of forklift operators and utility staff after the day shift ends, with minimal downtime or service interruption. Manage lift operator and utility staff: In collaboration with, and with direction from Warehouse Manager, accomplishes warehouse human resources objectives by training, coaching, counseling, disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising job contributions; adhering to policies and proceduresDirect Swing Shift Forklift Operations:
Manage and guide a team of forklift operators and utility staff on the swing shift. Assign tasks to forklift drivers across receiving, bottling, and shipping areas as needed, ensuring efficient use of resources and maintaining productivity throughout the night. Step in to provide hands-on support or training to the team members as required. Outbound Order Staging forNext Day:
Take full responsibility for staging all outbound orders scheduled for next-day shipping . Coordinate the picking and staging of products overnight so that the day shift can begin loading and shipping immediately each morning, improving on-time delivery performance.Performance Tracking:
Gather and report key performance metrics for the swing shift shipping and production put-away operations - such as pallets moved per man-hour, order accuracy, and on-time shipments - contributing to the warehouse's overall KPI tracking and continuous improvement efforts.Facility Preparedness & Handoff:
At the end of each night, ensure the warehouse is clean and organized, and ready for the next day's operations . This includes confirming that all production outputs are properly put away, the shipping dock is clear of any residual loads or materials, and that all outbound orders for the next morning are fully staged. Provide a thorough shift report and briefing to the incoming Day Shipping Supervisor each morning to guarantee a seamless transition between shifts.Duties & Responsibilities:
Labor Time Management:
Utilize the HR system to review and approve timecards for the swing-shift bottling, shipping and receiving forklift team (9 direct reports), ensuring accurate labor tracking and compliance with company policies.Equipment Maintenance:
Ensure execution of proper preventative and reactive maintenance of forklift/battery fleet. Performs battery maintenance and ensures policies and procedures are followed. Works with facilities maintenance team to coordinate necessary repairs.Live Staging & Problem Resolution:
During active shipping hours (3:30 PM - 8:00 PM), monitor and assist with any live staging or loading needs , resolving issues such as missing items, paperwork discrepancies, or load adjustments to prevent delays.Appointment Adherence Monitoring:
Track carrier and vendor appointment adherence during the swing shift, documenting any late arrivals, no-shows, or scheduling conflicts. Communicate issues and any recommended corrective actions to the Warehouse Manager or relevant stakeholders to support continuous improvement in scheduling efficiency and carrier/vendor performance. Inventory Control -Cycle Counts:
Execute nightly inventory cycle counts and oversee any required stock adjustments during the swing shift. Work with inventory control or use WMS/ERP tools to ensure counts are properly recorded, contributing to high inventory accuracy for the facility.Truck Driver Check-In/Out:
Oversee the check-in and check-out of truck drivers arriving for late pickups or deliveries, between 3:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Verify that all arriving carriers are promptly processed and all departing trucks are loaded, documented, and dispatched on schedule. Oversee loading/unloading of all loads and ensure all are accurate and properly documented.Cross-Functional Communication:
Works closely with the Day Shipping Supervisor and Receiving Senior Supervisor to exchange information on inbound/outbound schedules and inventory status.Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
High school diploma or GED required. Additional coursework or a degree in logistics, supply chain management, or business is a plus.Warehouse Experience:
3+ years of experience in warehouse operations or logistics , with a focus on shipping or distribution. Prior experience in a fast-paced shipping/receiving department is highly desirable.Supervisory Experience:
1-2+ years in a lead or supervisory role in a warehouse or similar environment. Proven ability to manage a small team (forklift operators or warehouse associates) and meet operational deadlines.Technical Skills:
Familiarity with warehouse management systems , shipping scheduling software, and inventory control processes . Proficiency with basic computer applications (email, MS Office) and experience using labor or timekeeping systems (e.g., Paycom ) for payroll approvals.Key Competencies & Skills:
Leadership & Team Coordination:
Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and direct a team of forklift operators . Proven capability in delegating tasks and managing workforce productivity to meet shipping schedules.Communication:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to give clear instructions to drivers and warehouse staff and to coordinate effectively with other supervisors and departments.Organizational & Time Management:
Exceptional time management and organizational abilities to handle multiple priorities during the critical morning shipping window. Must be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment and quickly adjust to changing shipment schedules.Problem-Solving:
Adept at troubleshooting logistical issues on the dock (e.g., unexpected carrier delays, last-minute order changes) and implementing swift solutions to maintain on-time outbound performance. Attention toDetail:
Strong focus on accuracy in order picking, staging, and documentation to ensure correct orders are shipped and inventory records remain accurate.Data-Driven & Analytical Skills:
Ability to collect, analyze, and act on operational metrics (e.g. throughput rates, efficiency ratios) to identify areas for improvement. Comfortable using data to drive decisions that enhance shipping efficiency and productivity.Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Cooperative mindset for working with other supervisors (Receiving and Swing Shift) to share information, cross-train in various warehouse functions, and ensure full coverage and continuity between shifts. Working Conditions While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk to hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Language Skills Advanced English language skills including ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence with internal / external customers and vendors. Advanced communication and exceptional customer service skills a must. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Demonstrate strong math skills. Certification, Licenses, Registrations Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and standard warehouse safety practices (hazard communication, PPE usage, forklift safety) is required. Forklift certification and valid CDL is a requirement for this position. Clamp experience will be required but will train the right candidate. This annual base salary range reflects the expected hiring range for this position. Please note that this salary is solely for candidates hired to perform work within California and refers to the amount DFG Beverage is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Actual compensation offered may vary from the posted salary range based upon the candidate's geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
